weight gain does this happen?

this is my first time on this site,so help someone can answer.I am 54 and found out last may I have hepatitis c and just found out two months ago it is type 1a , and do not have medical so it has taken this much time to get help see a gastroenterologist april 25 . I,ve been 135 pounds for many years and never ever gained weight and now the last 6 months I am  160 . someone told me it could be side affect from hetatitis the weight does not bother having it but i could never gain weight and now its no problem has any one else gained weight at all . I have not started treatment I will start april 25 any help would grat tnanks  so much

I actually stayed HOME from my HATED job today ... F them is all I  could think this morning I just couldn't go deal with my boss yuck!

The manufacturer of the meds. has a program called pegassist they will give you the meds. if you don't have insurance & can't afford it. I think the meds. cost between $3,ooo.oo & $3,500.00 a month.  I don't have the phone number right now but there are others here that know it.

thanks everyone for all the information. and no have not had liver biopsy yet. it taken so long to get help no health care and unemployed and looking for work. want to health department and they helped me get health care card but only some dr in this state take so had to wait till could find dr that took it . so will have to wait till april 25 or 26 hope to start treatment then .this year has got to get better last year was the pit but happy to found a place were i can talk listen and learn thanks everyone and good luck to all

I've never heard of weight gain specifically associated with Hep C.  It might, however, be an indication that your thyroid is sluggish, and there is a proven connection between autoimmune thyroiditis and hepatitis.  Ask your doc to run a thyroid panel.  If your TSH level is high, you might be suffering from hypothryoidism.   Other accompanying symptoms tend to be depression, fatigue, cold extremities, thining hair, and so on.  A good source for information is  http://thyroid.about.com .

I agree with the person above - a sudden weight gain really doesn't sound like it's just the cause of hep to me really.  You have probably had this for many years and not realized it - that is the case with just about all of us in here. That would mean it's something that you are doing differently since your diagnosis.

I would advise to get a biopsy asap and determine how much damage there is to your liver as well.  It is really pretty crucial for you to get over the panic of having it now and finding out what you can do about it.

You will probably find out you have had this for a long time and that will show you...it's not the hep.

welcome to the site! from an ex 1a, also at the same age.
If the wt gain is not from self medicating with food because of the diagnosis, it needs to be addressed at your consult with the hepatologist. Too bad you can't get an appt sooner.
did you get a liver biopsy? if not, you might want to consider one, to see how much damage there has been to your liver.
