how sick is she can only be answered by her physician, hopefully a hepatologist.  if you go to janis7hepc.com you find tons of hep c information to help you understand what your mom is going through.  What state is she in? has she been evaluated by a transplant team?  does she have access to a research hospital where you can possibly get a consult with a specialist?  A few members here have treated the hep c with the current available meds and some have been cured and some have averted progression of the damage.  what is her genotype?

here is a resource for you in the UK
http://www.britishlivertrust.org.uk/content/links/support_groups.asp

her condition seems very serious, and as mentioned by coldfeet, hospice could be a possible contact to assist you and guide you down the proper path.  If she was evaluated by a team of specialists and they can't come up with a treatment plan, you either have to accept this, or research online for aggressive providers that are willing to try anything possible for your mom. It is a very sad to see that things have progressed this far.  How old is she? She might have a good dr, but it does not hurt to try and get a second opinion, even if it is by email.  try Dr. Dieterich, in NYC and hepatitisdoctor.com
good luck in your search

The stages of liver disease is posted further down on this page, but without a transplant I don't see a positive prognosis, If she is not a candidate for transplant, I would contact my closest Hospice center, they have rules but they take care of her and her meds, and supply a nurse and support agencies to help the family through times like this, I'm very sorry she's so ill.

My dad had the same thing in 2003.He was very swollen and dilusional. The only thing the hospital could tell us is that he was having alcohol withdrawls meanwhile he hadn't drank in 2 years.Anyway,he got better about a week later and they let him go home he started taking lactulose to control his amonia (ammonia) levels(which did not help). He rapidly became worse within 4 months it got to where he could not talk, eat by himself, had to put diapers on him.We kept him home as long as we could but eventually had to be put in the hospital and passed away 1 week later. Please if there is anything you want to say to your mother that you may have not had a chance to say in awhile you should say it now.My father was well enough in that 4 month period to where I took him out to dinner,movies,etc.. and just spent as much time as I could with him.He was my best friend and I miss him dearly. My mother found out she had Hep C one year after he passed she is not doing well either. This is a very sad situatuion for all of us and I wish you and your mother the best of luck. She needs you now more than ever.
