HIGH ALT/AST lvls help

My husband had a blood test prior to a surgery in Aug 2010 showing AST 72 and a ALT of 162 . This doctor did not mention these levels and did a inguinal hernia surgery. Now it's Feb 2010 and he went in for pain in the groin area we were concerned it maybe a prostate issue so there was another blood test done.
The call we received was not about the prostate but about his ALT now somewhere around 186 I don't have the test number in front of me. They are looking to do a LFT and test or hep c.

I am lost who to go to for a good diagnosis. Hepatogist, gastro, etc.

also, how can drinking prior to a blood test effect the ALT, AST lvls. How long should he wait to take the next test?

Any suggestions, comments, advice will be welcomed.
