Colonoscopy

Hi everyone,
Well, I had my colonoscopy yesterday. I didn't think they would find anything after 42 1/2 years being a vegetarian. No polyps, just a little diverticulitis. I have to eat more greens. He said to come back in 10 years when I'm 75. Fat chance! LOL.

The anethesia always makes me sick. I feel a lot better after a good long sleep.
You definitely need a ride to and from the procedure. I was very groggy afterwards.

Well another 10 days and I get my 3 month PCR.

Hope everyone is hanging in there.

Herard a radio interview today about a woman who was not properly anestisized during an eye removal procedure.  She was in a paralytic state, but aware of what was going on during the 5 hour procedure.  Immediatley I thought about being aware during a colonoscopy.  Just wonder what quips we miss out when the colon team are flopping a limp person around on the table.  Things like 'oh man look at that' or 'I'm going cave exploring this weekend', or 'what's in the cafeteria today, hope it's not sausage again' or 'you brining brownies for the Christmas potluck'  or 'did you hear that echo, hello-hello-hello', or 'is that a gerbil's tail'.

If you're over 45 they are always going to say "diverticulitis". It's like taking your car for inspection - "we had to top off your windshield washer fluid". Congratulations! Mike

Thanks a lot FlGuy.  I'm scheduled to have an upper and lower next month.  When I cringed while talking with my doc, he said not to worry, he will make an exception and actually clean the scope between procedures.

thanks for sharing - i have my very first colonoscopy scheduled for 12/19 - i'm nervous, but everyone says the worst part is the prep, is that true?  i am overdue for this procedure as both my parents had colon cancer.
flguy - oh god, do you think i'll be the butt of their jokes?  heh.  that's one i would not want to wake up during....

Thanks for all your comments. Flguy you are hilarious! Thanks Mike.

Chellsi: No, I didn't find the prep bad. They ignored me for over 20 min. and were busy with other patients. Then all of a sudden 2 nurses descended on me and said, "The doctor is waiting." They were in a big hurry. Then when they got me in the room with the doctor another nurse said, "take your time recovery room is full and there's no room for her anyway". I felt like saying, "That's OK you can just put me in the hall. My insurance is paying for a semiprivate room".

Don't plan any social activities the day after your procedure because they pump you with air and you have to get it all out or it will give you a stomach ache. So, I'm just tooting around the house today!

grandma -- I am still putting that one off.  Every year, I just roll my eyes and say, I know.............
Congrats on your good report.  42 years a veggie -- wow

Chellski - sounds like you do need to get this done if both parents had colon cancer.   Good luck on that.  I will be thinking of you.

Frijole: Thanks.

Chellski:  I just realized what your friends meant when they said the prep work is the worst part. I forgot, it is the day BEFORE the procedure when you have to drink this goop that cleans you out. You get very little notice of having to use the toilet. I must have changed my underwear about 5 times. I can't stay in the bathroom all day long. Good luck with yours.

I had a procedure where I was "alert" before going to recovery. I heard the drs. during the whole thing, grooggy but heard them,( I had refused general anesthesia.) so as they took the oxygen off I said , so Bj's is the best place to have your tires changed, boy was there face red.!

I have to schedule another colonoscopy for February; the last one three years ago found six polyps and two adenomas, so they want to take another peek.

I was very much alert during my last procedure, although I didn’t experience discomfort. I was able to keep track of the polyp count, and was talking to the doctor throughout the procedure. The camera was rolling, and I was watching the action:

“Hey, big guy, I’m lost; where are we now?”

“We’re in the descending colon, just making the turn into the cecum.”

“OK, cool; Looks like I did a decent job prepping out, eh?”

“Yeah, I don’t need the windshield wipers for this one! I wish everyone was this considerate…”

“Now, looky here; we found another polyp; let’s grab it with the head, and well snip it off and retract for biopsy.”

“Way cool, look at that”. (Watching the screen) “Hey, can you download this on a disc for me?”

“No, but if you like, I can run some still photo’s for you, Bill.”

As I was quietly passing gas in the recovery room, the doc brought in the pics. Pretty cool shots; they were wallet size, and I gave a couple to my kids. Now, they can say to their friends, “Hey, you remember what an @sshole my Dad used to be? Well, look at him now; he hasn’t changed a bit since then.

I’ll be back in Feb with chapter two of the continuing saga…

I had a colonoscopy, bad experience, I woke up half way through the procedure.  In my opinion they didnt give me enough anaesthesia, as I was taking a high dose of serepax at that time and I believe in that case they should give you a bit extra.  (just my theory).
I only woke for less than a minute then went to sleep again.
The results showed a few polyps, to be looked at again in a couple of years.  They should have taken them off whilst they were in there I say.
Anyway Grandma, glad it all worked out for you and good luck with test results in 3 months.

Got my fingers crossed for your 3 month SVR.

I haven't had a colonoscopy and I'm not looking forward to ever scheduling one unless it's the virtual kind.

I will give congrats to you right now for an upcoming PCR test; I prefer to think on the positive side.  I had my 3 month test in October and it was UND.   My next one will be January and I look forward to that being UND as well.     I believe you treated for the year or more??    My regular doctor told me that I should have a colonoscopy as well (due to age of 56).  I will be seeing someone in 08 to schedule this.   It is not something I'm looking forward to but I have been told it is not as bad as I perhaps think............prep is the worst part.

Good Luck to you on continued SVR.

Good for you! Glad 'all clear' , LOL. That 'goop' is what made me keep putting it off and my sis and mother had/have it :{

  My hep Dr getting it done after tx. A MUST all! (wyntre, Child24 :}

  My sis is terminal (chronic cancer, being maintained thru YEARS of chemo) all because her Dr. didn’t do a colonoscopy when she had signs.

All of us who haven’t done it…. New years resolution ??? :}
