Disposal of unused meds?

Disposal of unused meds?

I know this has been brought up before, but I have some Procrit, PegIntron 80mcg, and an unoped bottle of Riba.  I don't want to just throw them in the garbage because I thought someone said it was a biohazard.

Does anyone know how to properly dispose of them, or is there someone who would want to take them off my hands and dispose of them for me?

Make a call to your tx doc ask if they can use them.  Months back, I needed a few pegs and my wife (works in medical field) scrounged a few from a local GI (maybe yours  on 441?).  Another patient had turned them in, unused.  Those were the ones I needed to get me through an aggressive portion of tx.  Will never know who that masked man was, but it may have been the silver bullet.  We'll see. I'll also be giving an almost full bottle of riba.

Hi, how are you feeling? Any signs of the fog lifting yet? HGB stable at 10.5. Dr feels maybe 2 more procrit.

Somewhat more energy a little more than 2 weeks after last peg and riba.  The fog is lifting a bit and certainly not obsessed and thinking about tx, taking the pills and counting down the days.  Sleeping a little bit better.  It's all gradual and feeling better kinda sneaks up on you.  Good ending to the procrit.  Riba has a half life of about 12 days.  So, as your body dispels the stuff your bone marrow can get back to its job.  Pretty soon the effects of the meds will give back over to normal function.  At least that's what's expected.  Isn't it great just not taking the stuff?

I lifted a post from elsewhere and am pasting it in here although I'm not personally up on this program;

"I have some exciting news!!  About 2 months ago we were talking about it would be nice if you could provide someone without insurance or in underdeveloped countries with the ability to get your meds in the event that you had meds left after completing tx or you were a non responder or went off tx because of sx……..well, yesterday I was watching CNN Head Line News.  They have a segment called HEROS and there was a gentleman Jesus Aguais on talking about a meds recycling program for AIDS meds.  I called to see if they knew of a program for Hep meds.  I spoke with the Director of the Recycling Program his name is Samuel and the hub of the distribution is out of NY.  He told me that they also provide assistance to the Hep community as well as people who are co-infected.   Any way if anyone is interested in sending any meds I am putting the mailing address below.  Here is the link if you want to watch the program on CNN & there is other background information at this link as well

If you have any questions you can email ***@****

You can mail your meds to:

New York, NY 10013

I was reminded that if you need to refridgerate the meds to send overnight with cooler and ice packs. They will take open bottles of pills.

It's my understanding that it may be illegal to (re)dispense some of these drugs in the USA and elsewhere.  In this case the drugs are shipped out of the USA and therefore sidestep local, state or federal statutes.  I frankly wish that there was some or more provisions that we could keep them local and help our own citizens .   I totally "get" that there are reasons for the laws.  It also seems obvious to me that we throw away thousands of dollars (or tens of thousands) worth of drugs daily that could be used to help others who cannot afford them.

This is a start at least.

FlGuy - Haha, that IS my doctor on 441.

Willy - Thanks for the info.  If my doctor can't use them, I'll send them up there.

That would be him, on the first floor.  It's very interesting how people's lives intersect, isn't it?

Based on prior comments from each other, I think we'd be surprised how close to each other we live. Who knows, we mave have see each other at places along the west end of PPR.   Until her office moved recently, wife worked in same building and I had a one-time consult with docs you see.  My tx doc is down the road a little bit. Itty bitty world.
