Fruit consumption

Learned yesterday from the infamous Dr. Oz show a little more about fruit consumption. Turns out there has been controversy among doctors about fructose in fruit and the potential health problems. So the report on yesterdays show was - In moderate amounts, it is good for you. The recommendation is consume berries and other  fiber containing fruits-26grms female, 36grams male. Too much fruitcose -  the liver, along with your stomach and a few other organs, store it as fat. I believe fruit played a role in my hepatic steatosis diagnosis, along with rapid weight loss from excercising and the Hepatitis c virus.
     I am looking for a chart on fruit fructose. I checked out a couple of websites but am getting conflicting info. Anyone know a legit chart for this? Thanks for any info.

Have to give a shout out to Brocolli   Not to go off topic, but if you eat 5-6 raw
flowerettes a day you can reverse liver damage.
Source?   An 80 year old Indian guru I met in my travels who knew more about my life then my self.  He predicted my liver disease among other things when I had no idea I had it.  One reason my liver was checked.  He said this would heal my unknown Cirrhosis.  So far so good.  Am a huge Skeptic!

Actually have been reading up on the benefits of this amazing veggie. In my research the liver does respond to its healing effects.

Meld score now a 6.  Do believe its kept me going.

So true about Dr. Oz.  If I had a larger income and somebody that would help me cook, I may be more inclined to eat only organic. However, eating only organic costs alot more money than eating the produce one can afford. I do wash everything very well and I do try to make healthy choices. But, I am not diabetic, have a low sodium, have a normal BMI, low blood pressure, so I must be doing something right.  Susan400

I, like Hawk, just try to eat organic, seasonal and local but, seriously, I never worry about fruit

So many good things about fruit - and apples can be in your fridge for weeks and weeks and still provide their Apple A Day magic

I have a hard time with winter veggies though. Just never was a squash or brusselsprouts person so I try to make up for that by drinking my greens - kale, celery, radish, whatever looks good in a smoothie. But I always throw some fruit in there or else it can taste like medicine. Blech!

I would take anything that Dr. Oz says with a grain of salt. He is an entertainer, not really a practicing physician and more than 1/2 of the claims on his show have been proven to be wrong or misleading. Just google Dr. Oz misleading claims on.

Worry about our health, what we eat etc, is not good for us. When I had advanced cirrhosis I had to avoid salt. I did not avoid fruit at all. Instead of sugar I tend to use honey or stevia. My concern with sugar is about my teeth, I've never ever heard anything about it being bad for our livers.

But yes, moderation is the key. I'm more concerned these days with avoiding GMOs and eating organically. Stay away from processed foods but fruit? Fresh yummy organically grown fruit ? I use it in my home made granola every day.

Thanks for your responses. Will be getting another glucose test soon. Apples- Have been choosing lower sugar content kind. Also heard they're good for bile acid. I eat one daily at work so that I utilize the fructose immediately, giving no chance of being stored in the liver.I have been eating bananas again in moderation. Moderation is key. Thanks again!

Here's a good rule of thumb for sugar content regarding fruits and veggies.
Any of these that are grown in the ground have more sugar content.  Think
of sweet potatoes, carrots, watermelons, beets, the list goes on!

Actually an apple is considered a "Super Food" and should not be limited.

A lot of people think, "I can go get healthy and do juicing" w/o realizing that the sugar, as you mentioned, may be harmful.  I'm not diabetic..., I've had my A1C checked upteen times and it's always normal. But, I do work out alot.  Usually, for me if I get a lab and my blood sugar is just a couple of points over the cut off.., like for example a 102.., then, that's a signal to me that I need to 'watch it'.  Like cut back on my breads, starches, sweets.  Whenever I've done that, it goes right back into normal range w/very little effort on my part.  I gave up soda's a long time ago, except for maybe a rare one if I need a caffeine fix when I'm having to stay alert on a road trip.  I drink a bunch of coffee in the morning, but that's all I can tolerate all day long. I drink a green tea in the afternoon (decaf.). Most of the rest of the day, it's water. I'm probably not a big fruit eater-although I know I need to eat more of it. I eat my favorite fruit that's 'in-season' for the moment, every morning, but the rest of the day, I pretty much forget about it.  Like, red grapefruit, or blueberries, or apples.,, etc., depending on what's in season.

Here's a thought.  Sugar is just bad for people with cirrhosis.  Lets face it.  I am a good example of that. I am a vegetarian but love to eat fruit.  My latest labs show my sugar levels up.  It's because of all of the fruit juice and fruits that I am eating.  I need to balance it more.  Plus I need to up my protein.  

Sugar will also effect your heart and kidneys....as one progresses with cirrhosis they do labs to show your kidney levels and mine have altered right along with my sugar levels.  

So...this is a bad time of year to do this but I going to get a good carb book that list the carbs, sugars, and fibers.  Usually carb total minus fiber total with equal sugar total.  But so many of our foods contain sugar.  

Right now, increasing my water.  Tea, coffee no sugar.   And I stay away from anything processed which is hard....I read the label really could but I have a NutriBullet and can throw frozen fruit in it and make most of the juices.  

It really all about balance isn't it.  This is a hard time of year but it can be done.  Never thought I could give up soda and ever drink hot tea or coffee with no sugar but I'm doing it.  I've been making up on  too many high sugar fruit juices.

I would not take everything that is on Dr. Oz's show for 100% accurate fact.  I heard him say one thing a couple of years ago, that was totally inaccurate about Hep C and just added fuel to the fire on the massive amount of stigma and misinformation that the general public has about Hep C.  He is a heart surgeon, not a liver specialist.  I would not go to a dermatologist and ask them questions about my bones.  Nor would I go to a gynecologist and ask them questions about my eyes.  I'm just saying.  It's always best to read infomation from various sources and see if they are all on the same page, or if there are 5 or 6 different view points about it and then, talk to your own physician.  There have been times that I had a doctor prescribe me something, and it did not agree with my body, my system, whatever.., and I told them, 'look I cannot take this medication it does ..., to me and can we find a different way to treat such and such',     But, I can tell you that I would not give up eating a food like fruit, that I liked alot, just because of something I heard Dr. Oz say on T.V.  That's just me...
