Hep C, Exercise and Exhaustion

Over the last 10 years or so, every now and then I will get a wild hair and start exercising, try to lose weight and generally get healthier. I need to lose about forty pounds or more to try and lose some liver fat, which I was diagnosed with fatty liver 12 years ago, along with Hep C.
Sometimes I get a little carried away and do too much. Then, the next day I will be totally exhausted the whole day long. Not talking about running marathons, not at all. I usually walk about 50 minutes and do fine. Then I tried to add about 15 more minutes one day, along with one extra hill. Next day, BAM!!!
I am wondering if any of you also have this. I want to try and get in shape and see if I can get over this, but just don't know if it's going to happen. Today was pretty rough, tired all day from yesterdays walk, tried walking up Mt. Erie, here in northwest Washington.

Sounds like you're increasing your activity duration and intensity up too fast. You can't think of the process of getting in shape as a case of instant gratification or "getting a wild hair." You must only take on what you can handle gradually. You also have to modify your diet and start eating healthy. Exercise and proper diet go hand in hand, doing one without the other is like standing on your shoelaces. Above all, avoid processed starches and carbohydrates. If you can substantially cut back on carbs while maintaining your exercise routine, trust me the fat will come off. The key is to stay at it and don't do the yo-yo on/off thing or you'll just get fatter in the end and feel even worse. Also don't attempt extremes, like absolutely no carbs or absolutely nothing but protein etc. You'll set yourself up for failure if you do so, moderation and balance are key. And don't starve yourself or you'll relapse horribly and fail for sure.

It takes a sustained effort to get in shape and stay in shape. It's a lifestyle change that should last a lifetime. It will take time and dedication for you to really decide this is what you want and then to figure out what works for you and what doesn't. Whatever you do, don't view it as a quick burst of energy simply to temporarily knock those pounds off. It should be viewed as a gradual, concerted, deliberate move from unhealthy habits to a healthy lifestyle that will be sustained for the rest of your life - in a way that works for YOU, not some stupid health guru who wrote a glossy book. Good luck...

Ha! You thought I was doing the tx, I got exhausted shuffling around in the library when I was on that stuff. :)
No, this has been an ongoing thing, I guess it's the notorious hep c fatigue you hear so much about.
Overall, I'm doing pretty good, just when I overdo things is when I have a problem. I went for my normal  50 minutes around the neighborhood walk with ankle weighs on last night and I feel fine this morning.
Keith 2008, I can get worn out from working too many hours, too. I do pretty well on 40 hours, anything more than that is pushing it. No more 7-12's for me.

I suffer from chronic fatigue and have the same symptoms as you. If I work too much I will have major setback the next day. My Doctor does not seem to be very sympathetic to this problem either. I generally feel tired all the time with little energy. I have to push myself hard just to try and get things done. I have been suffering from this for two years now. If I eat a meal I get real tired after eating and might need a nap. It's all very frustrating. I want to go back to work but just don't have the energy to to so.

Several years ago my husband's uncle had his gallbladder removed. He was close to 90, an age where most people undergoing a similar event wouldn't return to their prior physical condition. He had been a professional baseball player in the 30's and 40's, and had never stopped being a jock, and it was fascinating to me to watch him regain his health.

We did after-dinner walks, a group of us, and it wasn't long before he was joining us. However, he never walked too far, stopping when he knew he could manage the walk back (which he did with assistance at first) and then every day walking only about fifteen feet more. Slowly, inexorably, he retrained himself and got his strength and stamina back. He was playing golf again by the end of the summer.

It was really interesting for me--who has never been an athlete--to see how faithful to his exercise he was, how unrelenting, and yet how careful. He never overdid it because that would only set him back.

Bit by bit we get stronger; not all at once.

I have the same problem but with daily activity...if I overdo it one day then I have to take a day or two to recoup.

Annie and Jd are right, add 5 minutes to your workout instead of 15 but leave out the extra hill. Focus on keeping your heart rate at a target level

Water is our friend...not only because fat floats but because it rejuvenates when we drink it...so stay hydrated and you will notice a difference in your energy level

nutrition.about.com/library/blwatercalculator.htm

Don't work out every day when you start, every other day or two for the first week or two

Find a good LIQUID multi vitamin with minerals...I notice the difference more with a liquid then a hard pill form. What we eat doesn't always give us what our bodies need.

Now I need to practice what I preach...I avoid my basement like the plague...I have a very nice home gym down there...  =0

My workouts cost me more, physically, than ever before.  But I am determined!  I think annie has the idea, work your way up slowly.  I try to vary my routine, I do best in the pool, either swimming or else water aerobics. I'm not fighting gravity,  I get the added resistance of the water and support for my joints.  Water is our friend.  Fat floats!

Maybe you should try to add 5 minutes instead of 15. Or add in short bursts of going faster. That is supposed to work great. Little baby steps add up. I got a wild hair and went to the gym tonight just to do some light weights because it's been a couple months and I've been having a rough time lately. We shall see how I feel tomorrow! Try adding a little bit more but not as much as you have been. We try to get better results by doing things like that and end up with a setback. You really do need to keep up the exercise. Forty lbs. is quite a bit extra to be carrying around, and I'm not going to preach to you about all the bad things about being overweight. You know what they are. Good luck.
