Hepatits and working in food service???

Hey everyone.  First off Merry Christmas-I hope everyone is having a safe, happy & healthy holiday season.  I have a quick question.  A friend of mine just called me and told me he tested positive for hep B.  (I have hep c-although nothing detectable as of now.)  He told me his doctor said he wouldn't be able to work in food service-& that no one w/ any kind of hepatits is permitted to work in that industry.  He was about to get a job at a really cool restaurant in a town where the economy is crap..However, I've never heard of having hep being a disqualifier for working in a restaurant..Seems kind of discriminatory and ILLEGAL.  I can understand if you have a gaping wound...but....generally if you were that hurt you wouldn't be at work anyways.  Does anyone know if what his dr. said is true?  Thx!!

A good place to post this would be the Hep B forum

First you would need to know what the doc meant by "tested positive". Far fewer cases of HBV become chronic than HCV. Most people who "test positive" for having had the virus go on to clear it on their own. Even if he is chronic, there are diferent categories of chronic. You would need to know the status of his different antigens and antibodies. Way more complicated than HCV. I sorta lost interest in the subject when I was told I couldn't get it again or give it to anybody else.
