Hope Solo/U.S. Women's Soccer

I feel sorry for her. Seems like the team came down very hard on Hope for an ill thought, but understandable 30 second remark made in the heat/shock of the moment.

I mean, if I were in her position, I'd also be in shock for being benched at the 11th Hour, for no apparent reason.  I'm also disappointed in the team "leaders" dumping her so uncerimoniously. Maybe more going on than meets the eye in terms of internal politics. Her coach seems like a real d*ck wad. And, yes, "Marta" rocks!

I think this writer got it right: http://tinyurl.com/2b83kl
And this one: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/feature?id=468135&cc=5901

What's really amazing is this snippet here:

"...As for Scurry, she was the goalkeeper whose diving save in the penalty shootout helped seal victory in the 1999 World Cup final against China. The following year, she was benched by new U.S. coach April Heinrichs at the Sydney Olympics in favor of youngster Siri Mullinix. The Americans lost to Norway 3-2 in the gold-medal game thanks to a pair of Mullinix blunders.

A few years later, Scurry was asked if they would have won the 2000 gold medal with her in the net instead.

Her reply: “I honestly believe that in my heart, yes. . . . I knew I could have made a difference in that match.”

Lady,

I was a striker, of course :)

That's really great about your daughter and her success in such a tremendous sport. You sound like a giving and caring mother and certainly deserve the wonderful 'distraction' she is giving you during treatment.

All the best,

What position did you play? My husband, sons and daughters have all played, the guys a lot more than the girls. I was the person last picked for any team and when I was picked I was always put in a position that would hurt a team the least, lots of good back-up players surrounding me. My name was never called for Red Rover!

I used to play a bit in school. Don't watch it all the time, but do follow men's world cup and some qualifying games. Also occasionally watch Manchester United games, and more recently LA Galaxy when Beckham was playing. Haven't seen a women's game for some time but Brazil is a fun team to watch. I was rooting for the U.S.A. , but after this, unless they straighten out and get rid of their coach, they've lost me as a fan.

I'm so proud of you for following womens' soccer. I love soccer, but can not comment as I was not watching. Just had to comment you for being a fan...

I mean I was so pissed off at the Coach and Squad that I was rooting for Norway this morning. Better looking squad to boot! But Marta rocks more! Did anyone watch that move/score on goal (I think it was her second one) against the U.S. ?
