I guess the fact that HIV/AIDs research isn't furthered trumps the fact that this type of research is "invaluable" to hepatitis research.

I suspect that pharmaceutical companies turning away from primate research has less to do with the ethical treatment of animals or their assertion that they have better ways of testing, than having learned what questions not to ask if they want to get their products to market in a timely manner.
Try googling: 'BILN2061-cardiotoxicity' and spend a few hours reading about a PI that showed fewer overt side effects in humans than boce or tela. Or type: 'cardiotoxicity-primates-proteae inhibitors' into your search engine and see what you get. Here's a couple from that last search:
