Acute means quick onset, obvious symptoms, and relatively short duration. A cold is acute. It will resolve, but pelase don;t use this as a reason not to get tested. Someone suggested calling the county health dept, and given you were the vicitim of a probale rape they should be on the ball.

Now, read this bit slowly......You MUST get tested, and now is the time to do it - while your symptoms are obvious and a there is no question that you are ill. Waiting until this passes is going to make it much harder for you to get medical attention. So please go get tested, and don't worry about the long term until you know for a fact that you have a long term problem. If it is Hep A, which can be transmitted through food, through contact and a raft ofther ways, then there just won;t be a long term problem. You just plain don't know that yet, OK? Hit the phone and start dialling for doctors:-)

Oops forgot my question! When the result come back, im considering it will be some acute for of hepatitis, are there treatments for the acute forms or only the chronic?  What are a person's chances from recovering from the acute form and if I did have chronic, are there any chances of recovering from that?

Well its actually a sad story, i never had sex, and then one night in college i drank too much and woke up next to someone i only vaugely new through other friends... i asked him what happened and he said we definitely did not have sex, but oddly enough i had torn "down there." (sorry if its tmi) but i stupidly believed him but got tested for all the common stds just in case.  Hepatitis never even came to mind, but ive tested for everything else so i guess thats the only thing left...   Thanks for your thoughts I have an appointment tuesday to get tested, please keep me in your prayers!!

Wishing you the best!

Do you have a risk factor for hepatitis?  Blood transfusion/organ tranplant/Drug Use/high risk sex are the transmission methods for hepb and c.

Get tested and hope for the best.  I'll say a prayer for you tomorrow at Mass.  Let us know what happens.  I have a feeling all will be well.

call the county health dept and ask where you can get tested for free or at least for less cost.

OK, so it certainly looks like the symptoms of acute hepatitis, which can be nasty. I remember sleeping under the desk in my office because I was so wiped out!

Hep comes in several forms. It may be hep A, which is fairly easy to treat and be done with. However, HepA is highly contagious, so you could be spreading it around to friends and family, who probably won't appreciate your little gift. You need to get blood work to confirm a diagnosis, pronto! In most cases, the acute phase will run its course and resolve without much more than a sensible diet, plenty of rest, and NO alcohol. Whatever the outcome, alcohol is now your enemy.

If its hep B or C, then the acute phase may be followed by clearance without further treatment.

Its also possible that HCV or HBV can move from acute to chronic, meaning it lingers on for years and years, usually without any obvious symptoms. You are accumulating liver damage without any obvious indication, aside from elevated liver enzymes [in most cases].  Most people here were initially infected 20 or 30 years before being diagnosed with chronic HBV or HCV.

So, if its HBV or HCV, you have time on your side. The earlier you get treatment the better, but there are new drugs in trial now that substantially improve the change of complete clearance with maybe half the treatment time. You can wait until these start to become available in 2009-2010.

Whats important is to get yourself diagnosed pronto, so you can stop worrying and actually know whats going on and how to move forward. We were all freaked out when first diagnosed, but its better to know!

I know.... I don't know how much a visit to a doctor like that would cost.... I don't have insurance and I don't even know how much just the visit would cost much less tests and treatment, I haven't been tested yet, Im going next week to planned parenthood, but I'm sure its hepatitis.  Ive ruled out everything else (I know Im not a doctor) but now my eyes are bloodshot and starting to turn yellow, in addition to the sore muscles, fatigue, nausea, loss of  appetite, etc.    Please wish me luck! And if you are a religious person, please pray for me! Ive just about lost all hope!!

Thanks so much,
Ill keep you updated! And best wishes to everyone else!

This is a medical forum where we have patients only and not doctors...would suggest you see a doctor first...preferably a hepatologist and get diagnosed
Jaundice is only the symtom of some disease you might have and jaunidce itself is not a disease,so the faster you got to a hep the better
Take care

What exactly does treatment fix?  Will it cure the jaundice or is it going to continue to get worse?  Does is "cure" the disease or does it just stop it from worsening?

Have you gone to a doctor for checkup? Suggest you go immediately if you haven't
I got jaundice last august with yellowing of the skin, eyes and tongue before I got diagnosed with acute hep c
I assume my exposure period was  two or three months before I got jaundice
I started treatment in  march 07 and just did my last shot last week
Wishing you the best
