For years we've used The Ultimate Sweetener, Xylitol derived from birch trees.  Has to be special ordered most of the time. Tastes like sugar and no aftertaste, looks like sugar, same ratio as sugar, half the calories.  Great for diabetics. Super for baking.  Helps inhibit bacteria growth in the mouth.  Forget the xylitol in the health food stores derived from corn or beets.  It's cheaper, but not the same taste and granular quality.
Never could become a fan of stevia.

I have started growing stevia this year.  It is so interesting, the green leaves from the plant are sweet when you put them in your mouth.  I haven't yet gotten to the point of processing any of the leaves.  Funny that friends are giving me stevia right and left ("hubby doesn't like it," "boyfriend won't eat it") after I've planted all this stevia.

Definately Stevia, I use the Nirvana Stevia from the Health shop which cost $10 AUS for 100 tabs.  It has a funny taste, but hey, you get used to it.

I used to have at least 10 coffees a day, 2 sugars in each, and I was insulin resistant, I cut out the coffee and drink loads of green tea with a half tab of stevia.  Lost a lot of weight and glucose tests dropped, insulin resistance tests dropped from 6.8 down to 4.0.  I also changed my diet and used IsoWhey protein drink, with blueberries, banana, ground seeds, and rice milk as a meal replacement.  Ate a good breakfast, with fruit and vegies throughout the day.

Ive heard xylitol isnt any good, and is synthetic or something, correct me if Im wrong.

Hope the info helps

Don't know that it matters much but my doc told me when I was on treatment just to give up the artificial sweetners and use a little bit of regular natural sugar that there was nothing wrong with it. Not white sugar this had a bit bigger grains and was sort of brownishy I  wish I could remember what exactly it was called I'll try to think.

Also recently I just learned that if you have bad allergies organic LOCAL honey is a great way to build up an immunity to the things you are allergic to because the bees go flower to tree to grass to flower and get it all mixed up on them and bring it back to the honey....so you should take a teaspoon every day.  It won't be an overnight cure but it made good sense to me who has horrible allergies to grass and pollen and things.

Xylitol (Finnish ksylitoli) was first derived from birch trees in Finland in the 20th century and was first popularised in Europe as a safe sweetener for people with diabetes that would not impact insulin levels. Today, using hardwood or maize sources, the largest manufacturer globally is the Danish company Danisco, with several other suppliers from China.[4][5] Xylitol is produced by hydrogenation of xylose, which converts the sugar (an aldehyde) into a primary alcohol.

How does xylitol differ from other sweeterners?

Chemically speaking, xylitol is not actually a sugar, but a sugar alcohol. It differs from other sweeteners such as sorbitol, fructose and glucose because the xylitol molecule has five, instead of six, carbon atoms. Most bacterias in mouth are unable to make use of such sugars. This is one reason why xylitol helps prevent caries.

Xylitol is much sweeter than sorbitol, for instance. Assessed in terms of calories, its sweetening power is the same as that of sucrose. It is also similar to sucrose in its technical and nutritive properties. Xylitol is an important supplement in the preventation of dental caries, and everyone interested in healthy teeth should be familiar with its properties and effects
