I wouldn't worry about occasionally eating a small portion of steak or prime rib. I prefer protein in the form of chicken and fish, mainly because of the lesser ammount of fat (especially if it is skinless). Tofu is excellent as protein if you have a Whole Foods market or Henry's convenient to you. Be careful about protein if your liver is cirrhotic and you are showing any signs of encephalopathy.
Thanks! You've given me better dinner ideas..Tonight was chicken fettuccine alfredo topped with toasted onions...And a teensy bit of spinach salad...(I know, spinach is high in iron, but it wasn't much..)
My understanding is that most dairy products are high in protein, low in iron (and some, like milk, even inhibit the absorption of iron). My husband's fave hi protein/low iron food is peanut butter.
For me too, last night I was so tired I ate a steak, now I feel bad!
Thanks! That does take the mystery out of the question...I appreciate it...
Since the iron helps with the replication of the virus it's just crucial to cut back on it no matter what - it takes priority. Which really does stink because of our tendancy towards the hemolytic anemia but we just can't have the iron in there.
It's not for lifetime and most of us are able to get buy using Procrit in the interim. sorry I can't be of more help but I tried to cut it out as much as possible in all ways during treatment.
Also you don't need extra A or K in your vitamins.....aside from the iron.
If you are concerned about your Iron you can get it tested. You can ask your Dr. for a Iron test and a TIBC. If they are within normal range then you have nothing to worry about.
Several years ago my Iron and TIBC were way out of wack. I did something called "oral chelation" for 6 months and they came back into normal range.

Just cut back on red meat, replace with chicken fish etc.
Watch for iron added to breads, cereals etc.
And dont take Multi Vits with iron.
