Riba test

Can someone explain the diff between the screening test for Hcv and the confirmatory Riba test?

From what I understand, the screening test is accurate for high risk populations, mainly Idu and pre 1992 blood transfusions and is not so accurate for low risk populations.  The Riba test is very specific for Hcv antibody and a neg Riba 6 months or more after exposure is a neg outcome for hcv antibody.  These two tests check for antibody only, not the virus.  The pcr test check for virus.

Am I correct in this?  Any advice will be much appreciated.  Good luck to all on treatment.  I am sure that is not easy.

The initial test tells if you have had or have the virus.  If you took that test and you are negative, then you don't have it and have never had it. There is no reason to continue testing at that point.

If you take the initial test and it shows you HAVE had or have it, then they do a more involved, much more expensive test (PCR) to see how much virus you have and what type it is.

Riba is Ribavirin one of the combo treatment meds we do for standard treatment of HepC.

I know the riba test means R ecombinant I mmuno B lat A ssay and is a supplementat test for the screening test.  I believe it is used for confirmation of weakly + screening tests and is very specific for Hcv.

Ribavirin is a treatment for Hcv.

Thanks for your post. I just started week 26 at the same clinic. I'm doing quite well. I thought I read before that you were going to the same clinic (to DebNev). I have lost about half my hair. I have 2 scarves and waiting for the 2 turbans to arrive. Couldn't find anything in the stores. But I will check again today.  I had my CBCs done yesterday and I need to go take my Procrit.
