Staph Infections That Could Be Deadly

Overview of Healthcare-associated MRSA

This has been all over the news but just in case someone hasn't seen much on it, this is from the CDC. They are recommending that if you have children, especially in sports where they go to locker rooms, public showers, etc. I'ts very important that they don't share towels, other personal things, and that good old  regular washing of the hands is crucial. It's gotten to the point that none of us should share personal items of any kind, just to be safe. These staph infections are nasty and have the potential of infecting people with compromised immune systems or in medical setttings, even medical offices. (People on chemotherapy can be more vulnerable.)

Go to Community-Associated MRSA

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a type of bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics. These antibiotics include methicillin and other more common antibiotics such as oxacillin, penicillin and amoxicillin. Staph infections, including MRSA, occur most frequently among persons in hospitals and healthcare facilities (such as nursing homes and dialysis centers) who have weakened immune systems.

MRSA infections that occur in otherwise healthy people who have not been recently (within the past year) hospitalized or had a medical procedure (such as dialysis, surgery, catheters) are known as community-associated (CA)-MRSA infections. These infections are usually skin infections, such as abscesses, boils, and other pus-filled lesions. (see Community-associated MRSA. )

My sister-in-law had MRSA when it first came out, somewhere around 1997 or 1998.  Of course, the doctors did not have a clue of what to do for her.  In that time she got pregnant.......which put the MRSA into remission.  Freaked out the drs.; I believe it was a few months after the baby was born that the boils returned.  Finally they decided to trick her body by letting it think it was pregnant and put her on hormones.  Believe it or not she has not had an outbreak since!!!!  That baby was her 3rd child and the drs. and told her she would not live to see the year 2000.  She's still doing great!

I hope the doctors will figure out how to help your daughter.  It's a scary germ that does not want to respond to anything!  My thoughts and prayers are with you & your family.

My father has been hospitalized 3 times since Sept. The latest is that he has MRSA. No surprise to me since we haven't been able to kick this infection, and I'm very familar with the super bug. (Hate that we share the same name) He probably has cancer, but we aren't doing any invasive testing to find out for sure. His team of physicians all feel that the infection could kill him before the cancer so we are treating that more aggressively for now.

In the past month, my bosses aunt died from MRSA and a family we are friends with has it.  The entire family.  The people invited me over for drinks and then told me they've been sick!  Yikes!

I don't know about you all but I think my experience with Hep C and treatment have made me even more paranoid of 'germs.'  I hate feeling paranoid of getting sick.  I never felt that way until I went through treatment.

Another issue I have is that I don't want to go around our friends that had/have mrsa for a while because of my paranoia but I don't want to make people feel like I felt when I was treated poorly due to the hep c.  I felt like a leper sometimes.  :(

Our 29 year old daughter has MRSA. She has been sick for a year, the doctors kept treating her for broncitis and then pnemonia.( at the hospital), her family "NURSE PRACTIONER" had her get checked for MRSA. She then sent the blood work and the spit/mucus to the CDC. It came back as MRSA in her lungs.
I have been in nursing for years and I thought that she may have something like this. The news still shocked me and it was all that I can do to still not cry whenever I think about how sick she is and what lays ahead for her.
She has finished the medicating at home and it has not kicked it. They are waiting for her newest CDC instructions and her Dr. plans on her spending 8 weeks in isolation with IVs.
Her husband is so upset and so is my  8 year Granddaughter.
This is some pretty scary stuff.
If you DO NOT NEED TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL~~~~~~~~~~DON'T!
That is where she most likely came into contact with it, not to mention that they kept treating her with antibiotics for broncitis.
She has trouble breathing, she is scared and also she has no energy.
There have been more and more outbreaks of this disease.
A lot of local clinics are now having masks and hand santitizers right when you enter the front door.
BE SAFE~~~~~~~~BE CAREFUL~~~~~~~~~STAY WELL!

Just one more good reason to only go to the hospital until you are really sick.  Something like this will kill a person on antirejection drugs really fast.  I always get nervous in hospitals these days.  There is a laundry list of stuff you can pick up in there and Medicare has stopped covering several of them.  It is always good to be aware and practice keeping you hands clean.

It is a dangerous infection and I'm glad you are posting again about it. Most people als don't realize how important it is to keep cuts covered to keep infection out. So many are under the influence that they need to uncover a wound to let it "dry out" That's the worst thing you can do as 1) it leaves an open door to infection and 2) covering a cut actually helps the sore heal quicker and with less of a mark on the skin afterwards.
Thanks for keeping people informed.

Golden seal is a natural antibiotic but don't take it for more than 3 weeks at a time. 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off. It works GREAT! There are other one's also.

Washington's attempt to reduce waste, with our present government in charge, seems to be to "privatize" everything - like our privatized military, aka Blackwater.

Many have tried....All have failed.  However I love a good intelligent civil debate that doesn't get personal. Problem is...they always seem to get personal!!  Ah well..... it's just a 1 chapter in a person's book of life, and.... never mind, that was a lame attempt at being philosophical!

Hey, nice to see you fat and sassy here! Well, not fat:) you must be feeling better. As to you off topic topic:) I seem to have read they said the same thing about Medicare, and that program, even with it's problem, is doing pretty darn good. Maybe we should just look at our priorities on what we do spend, and what we don't spend enough on. Hey, your opinion is at least 12 a half cents in my book, any day!!!! lol.... if they paid me by the hour for my opinions, I'd be able to afford that trip to Tuscany I've been putting off!!!

Hiya, Thanks for the headsup. BTW, I agree that our healthcare system is in deep trouble. i don't pretend to have the answers, but I do know that I do not trust the government to fix it. I don't care who's in power, the governments track record on everything stinks.

Just my 2 cents and worth every penny!

Hi Forsee!  Thanks for posting,,,,I was just reading about this and had no idea so many were dying from it.  Very scary indeed and yes with so many on tx and in and out of medical places, all the more to be extra careful!   Also kids in school need to be totally aware of this.
