Ya otta keep speaking w HectorSF and maybe Bill1956 (think he has heard of the bleeds) and many others have. And maybe repost on the techinical side too.. Im wishing you the best. Ginger
Hope you're doing better.
I hope you've been able to recover by now and wish you
the very best.
They probably banded your varices.
All my best
Elaine
Sorry didn't realize you were in the hospital until you said soup..........yes I was in for 5 days with nothing but broth and jello.
Didn't they do an endoscopy on you?
If you can't get in to the doctor go to the ER that is what i did cause I knew they would just send me there anyway........
I think you need to get to a doctor asap.
I just want to note to you that I had a major throwing up blood incident about a month ago - I thought for sure it was varices but it turned out to be a bleeding ulcer and a tear on my esophagus. So, dont freak out but you'd better get to a GI and get scoped asap. You can't mess around with stuff like this.
ditto to what Gerbils said..Thank you Hector for your knowledge about this disease. many times you have been helpful to the forum. Thank you and I also wish you the best :) anne

How scary, I hope you're oK
Wow...what a scary thing to have happen. Without Hector's input, I would not have known what to think of that.
I wish you all the best and will lift you in prayer for many things, including a great doctor with much wisdom, and great treatment choices, whatever they may be for your individual situation.
Blessings!
Debbie
P.S. Only a qualified doctor can diagnose you. So what I say above is my opinion based on my own experience and the experience of my friends that also had or have advanced liver disease. I am not a doc, just a layman and patient.
Please post in the Hepatitis C Community for all health hep C health issues. Thx.
Glad your appointment is soon.
Hector
Yikes, glad you're are doing better and hope you continue to improve.
Was this spontaneous, or did you have issue with your throat before this occurred?
Thats terrible, I hope that you are on the mend. I havent started tx yet but wanted to comment on your post. I'm sure someone will answer that question.. you are in my prayers
You might want to post this over on the Hep C board rather than the social side. There are more people over there that have the technical knowledge and guidance for you. I hope that you are feeling better.

"Has anyone had this happen to them?"
"This" is a complication of cirrhosis of the liver. Decompensated cirrhosis. It is called a "variceal bleed". Varices are expanded blood vessels that develop most commonly in the esophagus and stomach. In people with cirrhosis, varices develop when blood flow through the liver is obstructed (blocked) by scarring, increasing the pressure inside the portal vein, which carries blood from the intestines to the liver; this condition is called portal hypertension.
To learn more about "variceal bleeds" and "varices" do an Internet search on "esophageal varices". This is a very dangerous issue. Many people can bleed out during a bleed. I am glad you are okay. Once you have a bleed it is common to have more bleeds in the future. So you need to be under a doctors care and be constantly monitored. Beta blockers and banding, which you just had done are used to prevent recurrence.
You need to get a referral to see a hepatologist. GIs are not qualified to treat cirrhosis. A hepatologist that either works at a transplant clinic or is associated with a transplant clinic. Varices are and indication of decompensated cirrhosis. The final stage of liver disease. How do you feel? Any fatigue, fluid retention of ankles feet, swollen abdomen, memory loss, odd sleeping patterns? What do your blood tests say? Platelet count < 100,000?
They may do a biopsy soon or not need to if you have other complications of cirrhosis. I am very very sorry you are so ill. Apparently you weren't aware of how advanced your liver disease was. It must be a shock. In time you will digest this news you still have options from which to choose.
I am also decompensated and have developed liver cancer (HCC) recently. I am listed for a liver transplant and hope to survive this cancer so there is always hope. Make sure the hepatologist schedules 6 months imaging to look for HCC as we with cirrhosis with hepatitis C have a high incidence of liver cancer.
Feel free to write me if you want exchange ideas. I have been decompensated for about 3 years now.
All the best.
