What do ya do the week or so before your first tx?

by headshop, Jun 01, 2008 06:31PM
Starting my first tx next week, not anxious, but I'm sure you know the anticipation. I have not heard from my PCP in a few weeks, have my appointment tues after next, then the meds. Do I get anything special or any preparations. How long does it take after the class to get your meds. I do know this, I was told there wouldn't be any more low priority deal.
Thanks

I can share with you what I did ...

I went out and bought Eucerin Calming Lotion
I went out and bought Nioxin Shampoo and Conditioner
I went out and bought a supersize bottle of tylenol
I bought a water resistent matress pad for my bed
I bought nice 300 thread  count sheets, new pillow new comfortor
Painted m y bedroom a nice soft color
bought a laptop and set up wireless internet

I made my room as cozy as could and kept my heating pad at the ready.  I also made sure I had plenty of crackers and soup in the house.

Make the week before treatment your week.

Thanks
Make the week my week. Shouldn't it always be my week?
I appreciate it. I was thinking I should work my tail off, see people and do as much as I could around the house. I like what you did better, and I guess once you start tx, the tx and recovery sort of rules things for awhile.

The week before treatment started I started taking ribavirin.  Oh yeah, some loin girding too.

Go out and enjoy the sunshine!  That is my one piece of advice. feel it on your face and your skin and soak up the wonderful rays while you can. Once you are on treatment.....you will react to the sun like a vampire so take advantage of it while you can!!!

all good advice,  would add don't panic, try and stay calm.  hard I know.  Get all the sides that everyone talks about out of your head.  they may not happen to you.  Deal day by day.

Remember to advocate for yourself.  get out enjoy the air, the sun,  take a long walk.

best wishes

One thing I heard to do was to drink plenty of water before I started Tx.  I think that helped me.  I also made sure I had plenty of different things around the house to snack on in case I didn't feel like running to the store.
Oh and I picked Friday nights as shot night mainly because I work.

I took my wife on a camping trip and spent the weekend apologizing in advance for the coming riba rage.

Hi! hs
I never could find that ‘Worry Off Button’ everybody else seemed to have. So I just started accepting the fact that some days I worried and felt anxious and some days I didn’t.

To deal with those ups and downs - I started planning ahead and - for me - it helped with those feelings of Powerlessness, Worry, Anxiousness, and the ‘Not Knowing’ - I felt  … Pre-Tx.

For instance:

Using suggestions from others on the forum - I came up with my ‘Just In Case’ shopping list (Aveeno, Systane, etc).

Made sure I had lots of clean sheets, clothes, underwear, towels etc. I don't want to go to the laundry when I'm feeling good - can't imagine what that would be like suffering with the infamous 'Flu-Like" sxs.

Bought a container that held 88oz of water – the exact amount of water I needed to drink each day - oh goodness has that come in handy when 'brainy fog' sets in.

I have not regretted doing any of that - especially since I live alone.

So if you think of something that may bring you Comfort (spiritually, physically, emotionally, mentally)  - such as –a teddy bear :)), nice cotton spread in your favorite color, or soothing music (Al Jarreau does that for me) – Go Ahead and Get It!

Keep in mind the path to tx is a new experience for many of us – a little preparation won’t hurt – as I said it gave me something to do other than ‘worry and wait’.

all the best in starting tx - keep us updated

Thanks all,
I live alone except for my pup Luke. He is a comfort and a pain at times.  I appreciate all the advice and to get lists.
I have not hit the worry button yet. I am sure I will keep it and my cell within striking distance. Enjoying things that I may not be able to do after starting tx sounds good to me.
Thanks again,
