Yoga for Health

I thought this was an interesting article. Yoga has probably saved my life in more ways then one. What's great about is that you can do it very lightly, even on chemotherapy. There is even Super Brain yoga that seems to be helping with brain fog, etc. Here's the article.

An eight-week regimen of yoga proved safe for patients with chronic heart failure and helped reduce signs of inflammation often linked with death, according to a study released on Monday.

More than 5 million Americans have chronic heart failure, a long-term condition in which the heart no longer pumps blood efficiently to the body's other organs. Health problems and deaths from the disease remain high despite widespread use of effective drug and device therapies to treat the condition.

Researchers at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta who measured the effects of an eight-week yoga regimen on 19 heart failure patients found the exercise routine reduced markers of inflammation associated with heart failure while also improving exercise tolerance and quality of life.

"Many people believe the addition of yoga may be beneficial in cardiac rehabilitation," said the researchers, whose findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association. "Furthermore, it may be that yoga has an impact on the mechanisms of action involved in the progression of heart failure."

The study found significant differences in levels of biological markers in the blood -- interleukin-6, C-reactive protein and extra-cellular superoxide dismutase -- between patients who completed the yoga therapy and those who received standard medical therapy. Patients on yoga therapy completed the regimen without complications.

Patients who did yoga saw a 26 percent decrease in symptoms on a standard assessment that measures quality of life in heart failure patients, compared to a 3 percent decrease for the patients on medical therapy alone.

"Yoga is aerobic. It is not surprising, in terms of its effects on the inflammatory markers," said Dr. Nieca Goldberg, who prescribes both yoga and tai chi, a Chinese martial art, to her heart failure and heart attack patients.

Goldberg, a professor of medicine at New York University, said heart failure patients often have trouble with exercise due to fatigue and shortness of breath caused by the heart's reduced pumping ability.

"What's nice is they found not only does it reduce inflammatory markers, but it is a safe form of exercise and it improves the quality of their lives," Goldberg said.

Beamish:  I don't use no stinking solar power........ I charge my power tools under these;
http://www.orgone.org/articles/ax5aorcp.htm  I am sooo off the grid.

I think if we can script a long enough fight sequence we should be able to work in several workshops full of product placements.  We could end up with more tools than Norm Abrahms.  I'm also trying to work a 8 'inch jointer and skidloader into the script as well..  Yes, I think the skidloader should be called Rosebud.

Lauri I've no idea where Beamish lives but I can tell you that he seems to be one of the more literate and sensitive stone masons that I've not met.  I'm in americas gulag, the "heartland" and nearly every winter I run out of meaningful work (that is....work done in exchange for money).  Since my kids are almost on autopilot I have considered going out of state to work in the winters.  I just left town for 8 days to work last week and found the house still more or less here uncleaned but otherwise undisturbed.

Foresee......I googled the term but I'm still not enlightened about what it is exactly.  My (ex)sister in law is a 20 year yoga instructor though and we still have great talks about yoga, alternative healing, diet stuff and world view.  She cannot imagine her life without Yoga

LOL...(as a representative for all men) I apologise to you for your terrible date. I'm just astonished that he waited for the third date to spring that line  on you.  IMan!! If that one don't work!!!!!!...... I'm also wondering what other gems you missed out on.  : )  It just goes to show ya; women are from Venus...... and men are from..... like..... Milwaukee.

Shastri ;My step daughter was conceived in india about 31 years ago.  I agree with what you said about yoga.

best,

Just thought would add my 2 cents here. I am an Indian and we have been doing Yoga for centuries and it has been proven time and again to help both mentally and physically

It is both a way to stay healthy and also helpful if you  get sick

Sometimes even when sciences have given up....yoga comes to the rescue

Super Brain Yoga?? New one for me. Do you have any links for it?

  Love the guys loving yoga. I've gotten some ol' hardcore’s to try it, that thought it was a sissy chick thing and agree it really helps back problems, muscle aches, etc. Amazing difference in that.

Right now when I see the yoga mat tho, it's a 'mannnnn, I gotta do some' instead of 'oh goody'!
Meditating is hard tho, especially on Riba! My mind was already a mile a minute before. Getting the head to REALLY be clear of thought is HARD.....discipline! not so good at discipline!

what? no sex ,drugs or islamofacist terror?...not another self-reflective,navelgazer,please - can we add a flying butress or two,some young struggling film school grads that find true love under the scaffold an animal or three-perhaps a horse or a whale whose fears are fanned by the fires;a massive cocaine stash stood revealed within the broken walls of san simeon or wherever that dang sled was left mouldering..y'know the rosebud connection that will cause the red carpets to shimmer w anticipation at the oscars...now if i can just find that acceptance speech i wrote oh so many years ago,thanking all and sundry except of course for those barbarians-ye of little faith- that will merely go pointed unmentioned...revenge,a dish best served cold,indeed!..we should get a solar powered recharger for the power tools,of course.

I've been thinkin more along the lines of coming out to LA and breaking into the writing biz.......

Farm boy from the midwest comes to the big city to work in a post fire LA.  Ends up lobotomising a scriptwriter mistaking him of the stonemason working for him.  The farmboy and mason co-write a script with the lobotomised screenwriter and produce a smash hit.  The synergystic combination.... an unholy alliance occurs and not only are the scripts becoming increasingly well received but the workers jobs....with the aid of the lobotomised screenwriter and becoming increasingly and eerily on schedule and below budget.  Conflict ensues over the royalties, love and the validity of  "super brain yoga" and a nasty no-holds-barred fight ensues with air tools, battery powered construction tools, palm pilots and thick food stained scripts.  By the time it is over there is a lot of spilt blood and torn danskins.

I won't reveal the ending but it's a kind of Get Shorty meets Regarding Henry with a splash of Dusk till Dawn.  Obviously there will be lots of scenes in yoga studios.  We can fill in the details later....over lunch, of course.

This stuff just writes itself........
(are they hiring scab writers yet?)  : )

I've done a bit of yoga and like it but never seem to make time for it.  I also like the things that exist around the periphery of yoga.  It seems that many things tie into yoga.  It isn't only about stretching.  One of these days I will have more time and would love to do more.  I believe if more heppers checked into lifestyle changes that they could minimise the impact of the disease on their body.  It isn't to say that doing yoga and eating yogurt can save us but I think many of us have some latitude to make little improvements in our regimens.

Beamish....... Do you do stone work?  That's one thing that I do; regular masonry work too.  As long as you don't overdo the yoga or lifting of stones I think either can keep you young(er).  LOL; I was crawling around last week trying to stand up after a rough several days of putting up a wall.  Also..... you ever need a lobotomy and want to save some money........I'm your guy.  I also make housecalls.  All work is ......guaren.....awww..... you won't care anyway.  : )

I'll have to look up the super brain yoga.  Gotta get me some of that.  : )

I like your style! ha ha! I love yoga, going to try this super brain yoga too. I'm still really flexible because of it, and it's great for balance, well-being, everything. The high you get after your finished is the best thing in the world, isn't it? Even if youre only doing really light sessions. I almost never have joint and muscle pains, etc and I'm sure it's mostly because of this, and I try to stay away from toxic foods. Even just looking at a yoga mat puts a smile on my face, but I'm a weirdo anyway, lol....

   Getting that 'crossed eyed' need to sleep thing here....
    BUT.....love yoga! SOOOOO good for all of your body and even if you don't want to do all the meditation, ummmm stuff, just the exercise part is awesome. Pose's/positions  are made to 'cleanse' this organ or ‘feed’ that organ, etc, not just stretch you out.  Before Hep dx, with the few years of total body, muscle aches, doing all that 'self diagnosing' (do I have fibromyalsia? Epstien Barr", Lupus" ? , "MENTAL" ?????) , LOL....when I stuck with Yoga , even just 2-3 times a week, the difference in my muscle aches was HUGE. And some days, aching, I MADE myself do it and always felt better. Plus, gives you a tighter arse fast! :}  I'd slack a couple weeks, than go back to it and it's amazing how I could bend, put face on floor just 2 weeks ago, but body had stiffened up so fast, it's like starting all over! You can so feel it working. ONLY exercise that doesn’t bore me too :}
   I am glad you posted this as I have not MADE myself do any past few weeks of feeling so bad and need to. So instead of getting up tomorrow and walking around aimlessly, going to do at least 30 minutes of even just the stretching, easy ones.

P.S. And yoga with a partner, men LOVE watching, (some even doing it :), women do yoga!
Trick with a partner…. Getting thru the whole session :}
