diarreah

by GrandmaA, Feb 08, 2007 12:00AM
Not a very pleasant subject, but does interferon give you diarreah? If so, what do you do about it?

YOu know, it's funny.  It did that with me, but others have expressed that it constipated them.  For me, it solved a life long problem with constipation, so I really didn't mind it. The only thing was that it inflamed the blood vessels there  and roids flared up because of it.

I would think any OTC diarrea (diarrhea) remedy would work.  I used lots of different stuff for the roids, none of which was too successful except those medicated pads.

I had it one day for about 24 hours and then got over it. Mine might have been a virus running it's course. Dr's office says they don't usually prescribe anything unless it becomes constant. How long have you had it?

by nygirl7, Feb 08, 2007 12:00AM
Grandma don't feel bad...in the year and a half I've been here we've seen LOTS of these type threads. THAT is WHAT the forum is here for!

Lots of people seem to have had this problem (but not me...I went the other way). I don't think you have anything to worry about but if it continues BAD you will probably get your electrolytes out of whack. Maybe take some Gatorade type stuff just to help a bit.

by revenire____, Feb 08, 2007 12:00AM
I have it.

by jmjm530, Feb 08, 2007 12:00AM
Metamucil. You can get it at a drugstore without a prescription. Just make sure you drink lots of water with it.

by Myown, Feb 08, 2007 12:00AM
To: metamucil??

by nygirl7, Feb 08, 2007 12:00AM
I thought so too.  I don't think you want to take that.

I think you need Immodium - that's what I'd buy for one of the kids.

I don't remember what the chalky stuff our parents gave to us when we were little is called but boy I can remember that taste!

Fiber works both ways on regulating the bowels. My father has to increase fiber at times to gt rid of diarrhea. I guess it gives the stool something to "clump" to! I've had a lot of patients that have fiber added to help with both conditions.

Hmmm, I was thinking "peptobismal"  the pink stuff.  I've had problems both ways off and on during my tx and I use the pepto for "both".

It's kinda like the joke about the thermos that can keep hot things hot and cold things cold.....added fiber can straighten out your bowel woes by regulating the speed of the flow through the pipes. It slows down the fast flows allowing the exccess moisture time to be absorbed, while speeding up the slow flows, getting the load out before it has tiome to solidify too far.

Maybe some added fiber would help regulate the flow of postings here.....

I never knew that. I take fiber (psyllium) for constipation and the pepto bismol I have taken for diareah .

Are yopu thinking of Milk of Magnesia?  What is that stuff for, anyway?

by GrandmaA, Feb 08, 2007 12:00AM
I had the runs for 3 days. I didn't take enough pepto.
Then I was O.K. with black stools for 2 days. Then I had the runs again this morning. But I have been up since 3 a.m. and I'm probably hyped up because of my upcoming retirement. It was a very big decision to make. Thanks for all your comments. I'm better now.

Black stools could mean a bleed somewhere in your body. Not trying to scare you but black stools are a symptom you need to tell your dr about immediately.
Goof: You have some kind of radar on the poop threads! Does an alarm go off on your computer when the words constipation, diarrhea, stool or poop pop up??

by GoofyDad, Feb 09, 2007 12:00AM
To: You have me worried!!!
Whoa thanks for the tip on the black stools. I just emailed my doctor, I'm so worried. I've had tarry soft black stools for three weeks and I cant get rid of them.

This is really freaking me out! Here's when it started:

I bought them down at the Lutheran rumage sale. Brought them home and I can't sit on them. Too soft - make my undies stick to my 'rhoids. Plus the smelly tar. I think they were owned by a roofer.  Put 'em out for the garbage, but the trash man carried them back up to the house. Anyway, I'm hoping the doctor will take them. I think he owns a fishin' shack up in the delta.

OK - Obligatory helpful comments: Pepto gives you the black poopie. Ask your doc for a script for lomatil (sp). Tiny white pill will plug 'er up like stop leak in a radiator!

The doctor said the black stools were caused by the peptobismol. It has stopped now and I had a really good sleep last night.

by GrandmaA, Feb 09, 2007 12:00AM
I forgot to tell you that I'm taking primadophilus for my recent intestinal upset and it's helping a lot. It must be refrigerated. I do shot 19 tonight or is it 20?

by Cindy10, Feb 09, 2007 12:00AM
To: Grandma
You sound like me, I forget the shot #'s now, I have to look on my log. I'm right behind you, #18.
Glad your feeling better!

Told you it was the pepto. You didn't think to ask the doc could he use some barstools?

Well thanks for the  info! Having taken pepto bismo once, on my wedding night and vomiting it back up, I stay away from the stuff. That was over 30 years ago!
Great night--not!

Might it have been something else you swallowed that disagreed with you? You know, the gooey stuff. Ladybugs love it, it's called honeydew (aphids make it).
