I am going through a separation and have a child. My ex does not like that I hang out with his former friend who has hep c. he says he is going to take full custody of our daughter because of this. I was wondering if he could do this and win. I do not see anything wrong with being friends with someone with hep c or even intimate for that matter. I do not feel i am endangering my child as long as we are safe. HELP PLEASE

Hep C is a bloodborne disease, casual contact with an infected person does not carry any risk.  You are not endangering your child by befriending a person with hep C.  Custody decisions are based on the best interests of the child/children involved.  No rational person would see any risk to your child from what you describe, and no judge will award or change custody for that reason.  Your ex sounds like a real a$$hole and he is full of cr@p.  Please tell him I said so!  Good luck, dear.  You're a good friend and you are well rid of such a bonehead.

thank you for your positive answer
i am sick of people acting like people with HCV are different. People forget that we are all the same.
I am going to the lawyer next thursday to make it in writing. we do have feelings for each other as well but he has decided nto to pursue anything until the custody is settle in fear that he might mess it up even though i told him he wouldn't.

You need to go to HCV advocate and Janis and Friends  and print out some information for the Judge and Lawyers to present.

Believe it or not - some people in the legal profession - or ANY profession may not know or understand HCV - and the possibilities surrounding infection, etc.

SO BE PREPARED.

Much luck - and may your custody issue be the best choices for the child --- and not for the parents.

PS. Just went thru this myself - although didn't have any issues with the HCV part.

Having been through a ....literally...brutal 3 year custody battle some years back...let me say....no...but nothing would surprise me in how the family court system works. With that said, the character of your friend is a factor..not the hep.

I suggest this...lay very low...live a very bland life....listen to your attorney...watch what you say and do...and if you win custody...remember...the other person is that childs parent too.

and bear in mind that what you see as a 'good person' with 'good character' and what other people...like a judge see as a good person, may not be the same. Listen to your attorney..

When I got diagnosed, I had probably had the virus for more than 30 years and been married for more than 25 years. My husband was tested and does not have the virus, even though, over the years he has helped dress my surgical wounds and other things that have exposed him to my blood.  My two daughters (21 years old) also are negative.
So clearly, it's not that easy to catch in daily life.

Goe bless you and your child. And your friend with HCV.
