Can't say I speak for all males, but just like to say that I give my general stamp of approval on unprotected oral sex and not to mention the risk protected oral sex puts on vunerable women who are allergic to latex.

Not that I'm obsessing about this, but...
You know the flap on the gas pump handle that secures it in a down/locked position?  That's what cut me.  It was made of metal, was very sharp, and it popped before the tank was even halfway full!  My finger was in the wrong place at the wrong time, so, oops!
I was thinking though, perhaps someone who came before me slit their finger while trying to lock it down, and maybe wiped off the thingamabob & didn't sterilize it, or maybe didn't wipe it off at all.  My finger went so numb after being cut so deeply, I didn't even realize I was cut, until after my tank had filled, and, lo and behold, there were splashes of blood on my car!  It didn't even dawn on me at first that I'd been cut; I looked up to the roof over my head, to see what was dripping on my car.  It was a very freakish experience, and my finger bled continuously, whenever pressure wasn't applied, for a good hour (I almost went to the ER).  It was even bleeding on & off about four days later.  Anyway, I guess no one has a crystal ball, not even the doctors, so I'll never know...but, oh, I'm also wondering if I could have autoimmune hep C.  I don't fit the standard "profile" for this, but I guess stranger things have happened--like almost losing your finger to a unruly gas pump!

In addition to the doors, there could also be curtains.  It's not unheard of to pick up the guests during dental procedures or other medical procedures.  Although the oral sex thing has a romantic slant to it I suppose. I remember thinking at the time the circumstances that would have had to be present in order to fill up with hcv and ethyl in that situation.  Even with your gobs of blood there would also have to be the casual presence of infected blood on the pump as well.  But, i guess no matter anyway how you got it - if you are positive.  It would drive me crazy not knowing confirmed results either way.  How bout you go get that pcr and send the bill to Goofy?

Also, a quick PS about my "fuel"ish (haha) encounter: it was no more Sleeping Beauty pricking of the finger, I can't describe how much actual blood there was, it was like something out of a sci fi movie--just from filling up my tank!!

There is another (outlandish) way I could've become infected: I received laser hair removal treatments (on my back) at a Kaiser facility, performed by an RN.  I would shave at home prior to the treatment, and right before she lasered me, she would "touch up" spots I'd missed, with a disposable razor.  Now, I assume she used a new razor each time with each patient...but never asked her directly.  After I tested positive, I told her, and she rattled off LOTS of info abuot Hep C; she'd known several coworkers who were positive, and was very into homeopathic/herbal remedies.  So I doubt, knowing what she knew about Hep C (and HIV, etc. etc.) that she'd be cheap & share razors--not when I was paying several hundred bucks a pop!!

And then behind Door #3, we have the oral sex theory...I just really wish I could know for certain!

No, I haven't had a biopsy.  The max time I could've had this (having tested neg when I was being inoculated against Heps A & B years ago, totally unrelated to this) is 3 yrs.  I've never had abnormal enzyme levels (my max was 17), and my one PCR test showed a viral load of 4,057.  I went back a year later to get another PCR done, my doc gave me an antibodies test instead (he'd told me he felt I had a 50% chance of clearing it naturally), so at this stage I'm not sure if I still have the virus or have cleared, and am going back & forth with my doc (he's receptive to referring me to a liver specialist).

I remember that cut finger at the gas station from a long time ago post.  Since it was before your hcv diagnosis did you ever have a biopsy.  If you had a bx and there was some fibrosis, it probably could not have been that fuelish encounter.  Not enough time to progress to damage, I'd guess.

Does any of this remind you guys of the post when the condom jumped up off the floor and into somebody's mouth?

I'll never forget that post, ever.

PS Mr. Potter you could have gotten it from a dentist or a doctors innoculation shots or about a million places we never think of.  don't sweat where you got it...it's more important just to know you have it and then let it go. It bothers ALL of us at first but then again once you realize it doens't matter it's fine.

I honestly can't imagine how you caught it though I suppose the accident at the gas station could have been the cause if whatever you cut your finger on had done damage to somebody else prior. However, I don't think you got it from the oral sex. Seriously do not. Of all the sexual risks (and all of them are small) that particular one is the most non-existent. It's been proven that the virus is killed by digestive juices, so unless you both were bleeding into wounds from mouth to genitals I really don't see that as the cause. I think I read somewhere that about 10% of people never find out how they got it.

I was infected approx one year ago, and having no "risk factors," my doc said I must've gotten HCV sexually.  I told him I'd only had oral sex, no intercourse (not even "protected"), and reminded him the CDC says HCV is not passed via oral sex.  He told me, word for word, the CDC doesn't know what it's talking about & to take everything they say with a grain of salt.  I was stymied.  I'd read that HCV can (rarely) be passed through sex when another STD is transmitted, or if you're currently suffering from an STD.  He'd tested me for every STD under the sun (exc. HIV) & I tested neg.  So, a year later (to the very day I was diagnosed with HCV), I came down with the nasty "superbug" that's going around, ie. sore throat, sinus infection, cough, etc. & freaked out, thinking I was co-infected with HIV too (due to the length & severity of my bug).  So I tested for HIV, neg too.  I'm stymied as to how I could've caught HCV, and want to read my doc the riot act at my next appt (he's a GP & has given me some, er, misinformation about HCV already, other than what I've mentioned).  [as a side note, I had a freak accident at a gas station, cutting my finger almost to the bone, just prior to my HCV diagnosis, & came down with a 5-day "stomach flu" one month after my gas station mishap; I had a run of 10 days of night sweats just before the "flu," but not during it.  I believe this is how & when I caught it, but I guess I'll never know for 100% sure...but it would be nice to know that I'm not the one in a million--or billion--who got it from oral sex!!!]

That .1% germ must be HCV.

Your all too funny....the range of humor here!

At the risk of sounding old or like my parents here......why is anyone these days having sex with another that they are not 'sure' about in any 'unsafe' manner????? (except for jim and Jenna, this would not apply!)

forsee.....isn't there a price for 'public service oral sex' these days....I mean like in cash....besides the price of odd, creepy diseases from the 100 or so they did before???

Goofydad.....perhaps an idea for a new kill's 99.9% of germs bounty paper towel???

And I have always wondered....WHAT is that .1 % germ that none of these 'kill's 99.9%' of germs' can't kill ????

NYgirl: Definitely a chance at HIV. Chlamydia, herpes, gonnorhea, scabbies, crabs, worms and anything else you can think of STD wise - but not so much HCV - although still possible.

Dang. Ain't you the romantic one.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Forsee: You're spot on about the public service and what not, but I think you did a disservice by pulling up short and not reminding them to properly clean up their messes when they're done. Common decency says you should have a moist warm towel at hand to tidy things up.... don't ya figure?

When I went to get tested after my partner was diagnosed I asked my doctor about these things. He basically gave me a "stamp of approval" but advised me that it would be wise to use condoms for anal sex, of course. But that basically things like unprotected oral sex and french kissing pose no realistic risk (for HCV) and that I shouldn't worry about that at all.

Would that be an agreeable analysis based on your experiences with your partners/spouses? I mean I kinda just took his word for it. *shrugs*

...AHA but what about if something freaky happened like getting ejaculate in your eye or something? That has happened with us since the diagnosis and probably since I was tested and I didn't think much of it at the time other than "Ouch, that burned." Your mouth and digestive juices kill stuff and semen isn't supposed to have levels of the virus (if any) that could pose any real risk. Am I just grasping at straws?

Ah damn, now I'm actually wondering about that.

Oral sex is performing a much needed public service....we all need to thank these selfless men and women who are willing to go that extra mile...sometimes, once, twice a week.....I mean, who WANTS to do this anyway? We NEED these selfless volunteers.....who are willing to go that extra mile...I'm sorry, I have to go, I'm kind of tearing up....

I really don't think so. The sexual risk for HCV is very low to begin with under normal circumstances (and I would certainly think no risk for oral sex). It's not even really considered to be an STD.

As for HAV I'm not sure. I've heard doctors say yes and some say no. Maybe somebody else can help with that one.

But I'm sure it's definitely a risk for HBV (hep B).
