set your own broken bone???

set your own broken bone???

OK, maybe I'm just behind the times, but I stubbled my toe in the middle of the night... on my new shower chair that hubby kept taking out of the shower cause he didn't like it..

and I fractured the toe total through, on the diagonal....and called the doc to say my toe at least...maybe more was broke..and had to wait 8 days anyway...

then the xray comes back, and the nurse calls and says just tape it up yourself.

Remember that Stock Trading commercial...where the doctor is telling the patient over the phone to cut betwenn the fourth and fifth rib...and the guy says...."Shouldn't you be doing this??"

so I called the orthopedist office,,,and they say the same thing...

anyway...with diebetes (diabetes) and on chemo do I really need a secondary infection?  What are these folks thinking.??

finally I called a smaller practice, and they saw me, re-xrayed the foot to make sure some healing was occuring (3 weeks after the break...but hey...it is nice to know....and finally gave me a sandal to wear that protects the foot....so I wouldn't hurt it again...

which had happened twice more already (once thanks to hubby throwing my shower chair in my midnight path again....)

sheezh.......but at least, someone saw me,  and pretended to do some doctoring....
maybe I'm just old fashioned  but I always thought doctors set bones, not the patients!!
silly me.

It's my understanding that the big toe isn't something they can splint or anything.  That you do simply tape it.  I think toes in general are like that.  So...if all that's going to happen is them wrapping tape around it ..  then it seems like a simple function.  I don't think there's any science to it, it's just taping the toe.  Like putting a tensor bandage on, we do those ourselves too.  Only a toe is kinda small for a tensor bandage so it's tape, I think.  Dunno if I'm right about that, but that's what I suspect.

I had my foot/ankle X-rayed several years ago after a motorcycle crash, and fortunately my foot and ankle were not broken. But then the doctor asked me if I had ever broken a toe before. My little pinky toe had apparently been broken in the past and had healed. I told him I had never broken one to my knowledge, but he was showing me on the x-ray where the break and fused bone was. Later I was thinking about it and recalled horseplaying with my brother years before and hitting my toe on the corner of a wall. I remember hearing a "crack" sound and it was swelled up and sore for a few days afterwards. But it got better, so I never thought anything more of it.

Anyway, yes I broke my toe without even knowing it and it set and healed on it's own! I didn't even tape it, so maybe you really can just tape it up and let it heal on it's own. I would imagine over the millennia the human foot has evolved to absorb and heal from pretty significant damage, including minor toe breaks. Still hurts though, owww.

I bought an ice axe for my first climb and I put a chair out with the ice axe on it. The night before the climb I went to the bathroom and forgot it was there and broke my toe on the chair that was holding the ice axe that I was going to go on the climb with.
So I didn't get to go on the climb that I bought an ice axe for and put on a chair that I stubbed my toe.

you lost me there dude....

but it turns out I fractured it twice....probably once each night he left it there.....

so if hubby puts that chair in my path again...I'll be coming over to borrow your pick ax...if you catch my drift...
