I should first say that my Lft's are normal but that I on occasion, experience rt. upper adbominal pain.  At one time, I had an elevated GGT which was do to a barbituate because it went back to normal once the drug was stopped.  My question is this, is joint pain associated with chronic hepatitis caused my drug ingestion?  Even with normal LFT's I am not sure there isn't something wrong with my liver because of my above stated symptoms.  I take an average of 4 grams of Tylenol daily and I worry that the symptoms I am having are due to a liver promblem. Incidently, I asked my Doctor for an ultrasound and it was within normal limits. My fingers are so stiff and tender in the joints in the morning.  I am worried.  What is your thoughts?

Dear Terry:
You ask some good questions and Ill try to comment.  Joint pain is a fairly common problem faced by patients and, in a majority of patients it is not associated with liver problems.  However, there are a few liver problems that are associated with joint pains.  Most of them do give some abnormalities of liver enzyme tests and most do not give abdominal pain per se.  A couple of liver problems that sometimes give joint pain are hepatitis B, hepatitis C, autoimmune hepatitis and hemochromatosis.  If there is any reason to be concerned about these conditions, they are all relatively easy to check for with commonly available blood tests.
By the way, I hope you are careful not to mix alcohol with that amount of Tylenol.  The combination can be dangerous to the liver.  I hope this information is helpful to you and good luck with your. If you have additional questions or more information, feel free to post the material back to MEDHELP.   The direct number to our Liver Clinic at Henry Ford is (313) 916-8865.  We have a very active group of liver specialists.
