Dear doctor,
my mother, 71 years old, has been diagnosticated cirrhosis last year after  a a hard bleed. Since last july she has had tree bleeds in the esophagus: one in july and two in september. Now she looks good but we are afraid of other bleeds and encephalopaty. Her blood values are not normal, very low under the ranges of normality.
Our phisician  prescribed humatin tablets 4 for day, levolac one spoon a day vitamin k and b and c.
We are worried mainly about the use of Humatin. She has not at the moment high levels of ammonia in the blood, and so i ask myself wheter it is necessary to use this antibiotic. I m afraid of the dunger of antibiotic resistance and nepropatic dunger that the use of this antibiotic can present. What do you think? sincerly your Giuseppe

Hi,
So sorry to hear about your mother.. I had the same concern when it came to my husband and they put him on lactulose and neomycin.. When I asked the Gastro about this he explained to me that this anti-biotic isn't the same as other antibiotics.. It works differently.  Like neomycin for example only works in the gut to reduce bacteria that is produced in the gut.  My husband has been on it for over two years now with no harmful effects.  The only thing to be concerned about as far as I know is that it's hard on the kidneys if taken in large doses.  I hope that this helps you..
