Dear Sally:
I appreciate your question.  Typically a log 10 value of 3 means 1000.  A PCR value less than a log 10 value of 3 is less than 1000.  Many PCR assays only detect the virus down to 1000 copies per ml.  A value less than 1000, means that the virus is either absent or present at a level below the detection of the assay (less than 1000).  If someone is on therapy for hepatitis C, a value less than a 1000 is typically taken to mean that a patient is responding to treatment.
I emphasize, however, that it will be important for your physician to go over your results with you to be sure that the results are being interpreted correctly and that there is no misunderstanding.
Good luck with you situation.   I hope this information is helpful to you.  If you have any additional questions or concerns, you can post them through MEDHELP.  The direct number to our liver clinic is: (313) 916-8865.  At Henry Ford, we have an active group of hepatologists with an interest in the care and research of hepatitis C.
