hepatitus a/what to do

my husband was diagnosed with hep c last week and today we werre referred to a liver specialist. i have been getting plenty of gtreat information on hep c but our gp told us today that my husband also has hep a. he gave us no explantion and told us nothing of it. can you please tell me what it all envoles and what it takes to be rid of it.  we are at a very scary point right now because my husband has had to have had hep c for at least 12 years at the earliet 20 years at the most from intravenus drug use.  is it common to get another form of hepatitus (hepatitis) along with hep c.  what do we have to look forward to.  any help will be greatly appreciated and we thank you for not leaving u in total darkness   god bless you all

Dear paul quakenbush:
I appreciate your question and hopefully, it will give me the opportunity to clear up some misconceptions about hepatitis A.
Hepatitis A, absolutely-100%, does not cause chronic liver disease.  It causes an acute form of liver disease that gives nausea, vomiting, malaise, fevers and jaundice.  In the vast majority of people (over 99%) it resolves on its own and causes no long term problems to the liver.  In less than 1% of people, it can cause a fulminant liver disease that destroys the liver and precipitates a need for liver transplant.  Unless, your husband is acutely sick with liver disease, it is possible that his lab tests are positive for the hepatitis A IgG antibody which simple means he was exposed to hepatitis A in the past, recovered and can never get it again.
