CT Scan Detection of Hernia

I am experiencing symptoms consistent with a hernia.  My doctor agreed and has ordered a pelvic CT scan (after a pelvic exam and a pelvic ultrasound found no issues, however.)

If indeed it is a hernia, will a pelvic CT scan show this or would an abdominal CT scan be needed?  I was under the impression that a pelvic CT scan focuses on reproductive organs only.

Thank you!

Can you be more specific than symptoms consistent with a hernia? I would respectively disagree with Dr. Sharma. Although femoral hernias are more common in women than men, indirect inguinal hernias are still the most common groin hernia in women. Have you had a good examination while standing? I am amazed how often I see patients that have obvious inguinal hernias on exam that weren't referred until they had had a totally unneeded CT scan. Dr.Sharma is correct that some oddball hernias can't be diagnosed without imaging studies. Obturator hernias are a good example of these less common hernias and frequently present with small bowel obstruction from an incarceration.

Hello,
The most common type of hernia in females is femoral hernia. It develops near the leg crease somewhat lower than inguinal hernia. It may be difficult to differentiate between inguinal and femoral hernia. Another hernia though very rarer called sciatic hernia can lead to bowel obstruction, sciatica, pelvic pain, back pain or ureteric obstruction. Clinical diagnosis of this condition is difficult. Since these hernias are in close proximity to the pubic area CT scan of the pelvis may be more helpful. If you are still concerned it is best to discuss your concerns with your treating doctor. I hope it helps.
Take care!
