Acyclovir

Like most I cannot afford Valtrex any more.  I have switched to Acyclovir. I've used it effectively for the couple of outbreaks but it seems to be taking considerably longer.  I am taking L-Lysene as a suppressor and only take the Acyclovir at the first sign of an outbreak.  I was taking 1000mg Valtrex at onset and then 500mg twice a day and everything was clear in 3 days.  To get the same effectiveness from Acyclovir how much should I be taking daily during out breaks?  I have tried 600mg Acyc 3 times a day but it takes 7 days to clear up. Please advise.

400mg 2x/day is the suppressive therapy dose with acyclovir.

In your first sentence are you referring to a supressive regiment of 2x/day every day? and at 200 or 400mg per dose? I don't have many obs as it is so I've never really done supressive theropy. I've had good results with Valtrex but as I said it's unaffordable now so I'm adjusting to Acyclovir.  Thanks for your help and input.

You get much better relief from ob's by taking acyclovir 2x/day every single day. You can do this for under $20/month in the US even if you don't have insurance.

Lysine doesn't help to heal ob's faster.  It also doesn't suppress the virus.

For acyclovir when you first start feeling an ob about to start, take either 400mg 3x/day for 5 days or 800mg 2x/day for 2 days. Both speed healing at the same rate.

it's completely normal for ob's to take a week, even with antivirals to heal no matter if you are taking valtrex, acyclovir or famvir.
