I have just recently confirmed that I have genital herpes. I have been searching for all kinds of suppressive meds for about a year now. I ran across BHT online and I have read a lot of information stating that this stuff works to suppress the virus. I wanted to know if anyone has tried it for an extensive amount of time and if so was it effective?
BHT definitely helps when I get a cold sore (HSV1). If I catch it soon enough, right when I feel the tingling sensation before getting blisters, it has actually prevented the cold sore from manifesting. I don't know how effective BHT would be for genital herpes (HSV2). Hope that helps.
My general rule of thumb is, if you google something, and find not a one legitimate website backing it, then it's quackery. And, I know for a fact that Dr. Hook, Handsfield, and Terri Warren would all most likely agree. Oh, and Grace, too.
we have no info on bht's effectiveness on herpes. all the info on it is general antiviral type property info. we also have no studies on if it reduces shedding of the virus either. it's also not all that cheap.
if money and reducing transmission to a partner aren't an issue, by all means try it. if you want proven effectiveness that is cheap, I recommend acyclovir. you can get it for $4 for a round of episodic therapy with a prescription at walmart and other pharmacies. You can get daily suppressive therapy which is proven to reduce ob's by 70% and reduce viral shedding by 80-90% for under $20/month with a prescription. If you have insurance with prescription coverage, it'll be even cheaper yet. The less you are shedding the virus, ,the less likely a partner is to contract it for you.
