Can a herpes swab test be wrong?

About a month ago, I almost had sex with my ex-boyfriend but stopped because I know he is hsv-2 positive. All he did was rub his genitals on my butt but no skin to skin contact or rubbing on my vagina. Two weeks later, I noticed my vagina was itchy, swollen and irritated. I also felt a slight burning sensation near my thighs. There was absolutely no pain, or sores but decided to go to the doctor to check it out because I saw a pimple form. Went to the doctor and she was sure it wasn't herpes. She did a swab test on the pimple and tested for yeast, bv and all other stds. A few days later all tests came back negative. I'm still experiencing slight irritating and itching. Could the herpes test be wrong? (Btw prior to this I had 2 herpes blood tests and all came back negative even after having unprotected sex with my boyfriend who didn't tell me he had the virus) is it possible to have contracted it without sex? Please help. I'm very worried.

That's hard to say. Depends on how the swab was performed and what test they did. I wouldn't be overly concerned about this last exposure

If he rubbed your backside you would not have had your primary on your vagina

Thanks for the reassurance. My other question is, would the swab test have picked up herpes if the pimple was too small?

As a timeline, I was first exposed back in November. I stopped having sexual contact in the middle of February. I got a blood test end of February and it was negative. I got another blood test in April and still negative. I had no sex in between that time till I saw my ex in June. And again he didn't rub his genitals directly on my vagina, just against my backside. I'm worried because I heard you can contract it by just skin. The pimple that the doctor swabbed might have been too small to pick up the virus? I'm just really unsure why I'm feeling symptoms.

From what you describe and no genital contact I would say this is not hsv related. How long was the blood tests from your last exposure? Hsv primary outbreaks happen at the spot of infection so having an issue on your genitals when his only touched you back side is not possible.
