Can a yeast infection cause a sore?

A few months ago I have experienced itching in my vagina and noticed a red lump. I went to the gynecologist and he said I had a yeast infection, he prescribed some antifungal, I did not follow the treatment as prescribed because I got menstruation and after a few months it came back. Another doctor told me I still have the yeast infection but to also test for herpes virus. I am confused because although my boyfriend has cold sores in his mouth we are very careful about that.
