Can cold sores be transmitted even when there is no outbreak?

A few days ago (1-3) my mom kissed me on the cheek. She also licked me on my face by accident. Today, she woke up with a little bump on the corner of her mouth which she says is the beginning of a cold sore. I did not kiss her today, but I did hug her. Is it possible that I could have the virus now, even when there was no sign of an outbreak at the time? I don't recall ever getting a cold sore. Thank you!

as an adult, oral herpes is almost exclusively transmitted through romantic type kisses. it's not likely you contracted it from your mom this week.

have you ever been tested for herpes to know your own status?
