Can someone get both hsv-1 oral and genital? Or just one?

I was diagnosed with hsv-1 genital 3 years ago and I have never had an oral cold sore. I have had bfs who had oral hsv-1 and had cold sores, but never seemed to have gotten hsv-1 genitally from me. I am now dating someone new, and he has hsv-1 oral. What are the chances of me getting hsv-1 oral from him since I already have it genitally, and what are the chances of him getting genital hsv-1 from me, since he already has it orally? I'm wondering if a person can have both types of hsv-1 (oral and genital) or if they might provide some sort of immunity against each other.

Thanks!

Unless you got an obvious cold sore at the time of your genital infection, no easy or cheap way to know if you also have hsv1 orally or not. What few studies we do have show anywhere from 1/4 - 2/3's of folks who contracted hsv1 genitally, also contracted hsv1 orally too.

if you do only have hsv1 genitally, it's very low risk that you'd get hsv1 orally now. Same with your partner has significant protection against contracting hsv1 genitally from you . always avoid having sex anytime you have anything going on genitally.
