Can you acquire genital herpes from HSV? And is there any post-exposure treatment?

My male partner has HSV1 (cold sore on his lip, but it was not open) and we had oral sex and intercourse.  I have never had a cold sore in my life or at least never displayed symptoms of one.  
1.  How likely is that him performing oral sex on me gave me genital herpes?  
2.  Should I start myself on Valtrex now to prevent the virus from spreading into my body?  Does that even work?  And if it does, what dose, how often, and how many days?

if he had an active cold sore and you don't already have hsv1 yourself, the risk of contracting hsv1 genitally is fairly high unfortunately.

no, starting yourself on valtrex now won't prevent infection with the virus.

At this point, I recommend calling your provider friday and ask them if they can order a type specific herpes igg blood test to be drawn on yourself to see what your herpes status is. Otherwise just wait and if you develop any symptoms in the genital area in the next 2-20 days, be seen promptly for a lesion culture and treatment.
