Chances of one time exposure

by Jonsie150, Jul 02, 2009 06:37PM
I'm sure this question is pointless is some ways, but I'm just curious about your thoughts:

Long story short, I found out that a partner had tested for herpes PRIOR to our act, but had failed to alert me about it. We'd had sex only once, and it was protected. I wouldn't say that there was a lot of rubbing at the base, and the act I'd say didn't last more than 15-20 minutes. I can't be sure if she had any open sores, cause I didn't get a look down there.

So, considering all this, what are the chances I might have contracted the virus?

(and yes, I do know that the only way to be sure is if I get tested, which I'll do soon)

Really depends what you did.

The way I got Genital HSV1 was my partner at the time gave me oral sex for prob no more than a minute... no sores or anything but did have one that healed about a week prior.

So yeah, the chances of getting it even with no sores at all does happen as the virus will shed with no symptoms.

Now I am with my new partner and I take daily supression drugs to lower the risk.  The risk is still there but much lower.

The risk is incredibly small since you used a condom - and too, she may take a suppressive antiviral. Here are the female to male transmission rates, based on having sex for a full year with someone who is HSV2 positive...

FEMALE TO MALE RATE OF TRANSMISSION (HSV2 ONLY STATS IS NOT APPLICABLE FOR HSV1)

If you have 100 couples where the female has HSV2 but not the male (these figures are over a year) the odds of female to male transmission are, if you do nothing other than avoid sex during an outbreak, 4 men out of a 100 will get herpes in a year, or 4%. If you do go on a suppressive therapy then it drops to 2 men out of a 100 in a year, or 2%. And if you use suppressive and a condom the chances are 1 man out of a 100 will get herpes in one year or 1%.

The Valtrex and transmission study stats are based on having sex 2 times/week.

thanks for the stats. it seems like concrete stats are hard to come by.

just a question: for the 4% category, are they using a condom? you didn't mention. just wondering.

The 4% is having sex when there is no outbreak, with no condom/suppressive therapy.
