Chances

I had unproteced sex with a women that has herpes.  She contracted it 24 years ago.  Since we started dating she has been on suppression medication for 2.5 months.  We had sex once (several times in one night) and I want to know what is the likelyhood of tranmission if she was shedding as I read you cannot know if you are.

Good to hear that you are moving forward with her.  I have H and my partner doesn't and he didn't care that I did.  It is very painful when you are rejected due to this condition.  As someone that has read so many books on this, it is not a "big deal" as the media and people want you to think that it is.

Blessings....

The rate of transmission from a female to a male while she is on suppression is about 2% per year, averaging about 105 intercourses per year.  I don't know exactly what "several" means to you, but I'm assuming more than two intercourses in one night.  Still,  your odds are low.  There are several things on your side:  1) she knows she has herpes so she is doing things about it which is far less risky than having sex with someone who doesn't know she has it and is doing nothing to reduce the risk of transmission 2) she is on daily medicine which helps greatly (though isn't perfect) and 3)she told you about it .  This also appear to reduce the risk of transmission.

Have you ever been tested previously to determine that you are indeed not already infected?  80% of those who are infected, don't know it.

I agree that your odds of contracting herpes at this encounter(s) is low.

Ive read that the transmission is approximately 1 in 1000. That all depends on other factors as well though. Since she was on suppresive meds, its unlikely that it was transmitted to you, not impossible though. Also, since she was on meds, we can assume she wasnt having an active outbreak which brings the rate down more. Overall, Id say your odds are pretty good that you didnt get herpes, but the best way to tell is to get a blood test.
