Chronic lip pain HSV1 positive

I have had HSV1 orally since I was 3 years old.

I had been on acyclovir 200mg once daily for 3 years. (Prior to that I was having outbreaks at least once a month.)
I recently switched to Valtrex 1gram twice a day.
I have no other health issues, but I do use a Nuvaring on a 3 month cycle.

About four months ago, I had a small outbreak on my lower lip, just right of center, along the bottom edge. It went away in a few hours because of the Valtrex, but since then I have had chronic pain in that spot.  It hurts when I rub it with my fingernail. The painful area is small, but definitely noticeable.

My doctor just looked at the area and said "I don't see anything", and then dismissed the issue altogether.

Is it possible that that one area is continuously shedding viral cells?
I'm a bit frustrated with this, and wish it would just go away.

Could the slight cortisol increase from birth control (and stress) be causing this?

honestly I'd stop taking it for a month and see if the pain disappears.

no, you aren't continuously shedding.

are you just treating  your cold sores while you get them with the 1 day dose of valtrex instead of taking a dose of antivirals daily?
