I recently got an HSV IgG test HSV 1/HSV2 non-specific test, which came back High with a 19.8. The LABCORP proceeded to do a specific test for HSV1 IgG and HSV2 IgG. Both of which came back negative, and two doctors told me that this meant I did not have the HSV infection, as the specific tests came back negative. Should I be retested? Or are the doctors right?
the non-type specific tests aren't very helpful in general. they can be falsely positive.
even the best blood tests still miss 1 out of every 10 hsv1 infections. hard to tell if your non-specific test was + due to other, non-herpes issues or if you really do have hsv1 and it was picking up on that and the type specific tests aren't picking up on it. typically the type specific tests are much more accurate for hsv2 detection than hsv1.
how long had you waited after you had last had sex
). However, 12 months ago I got a sore in the upper thigh area, but never went in for testing. I never got anything again in that region. However, now we are going through pre-marital counseling, and one question that came up was STD's. I thought I would get a full screening including HSV to clear my mind, and so I could be completely honest with her. Now I get this conflicting test result, and don't know what to think.
A couple notes: My Fiancee does have cold-sores and we have had oral sex
My doctor said "the non-specific tests can often be "falsely positive" which is why specific tests are ordered at the same time. Since the specific tests came back negative, it is very likely I do NOT have HSV." I guess I'm just concerned because the positive was a 19.8 which doesn't seem like a false positive. I have read though that the HSV 2 specific IgG test is very accurate, which came back negative.
