Confused about Test Results

HI,
I recently took an IgG blood test and came back positive for hsv 2 and negative for hsv 1. My number for hsv 2 was 2.55. My doctor told me that there is no way that it could be a false positive. I will start with the fact that I went to the doctor five different times this summer for personal issues. I went to the gyno to test an ingrown hair and have a pap smear done, everything came back negative. I went to a different doctor and I had a horrible yeast infection. They did a pelvic exam and also tested my lesions and everything came back negative. I did these lesions on my own from scratching from the yeast infection. I also had welps break out on the back of both of my legs in a symmetrical form, so i then went to the dermatologist and she told me that there was no way it was std related. I told my partner that I have been with so he went to go get a test. He came back negative for HSV 1 and 2. I am just very confused at this point and not entirely sure what to think or do. I have never experienced an outbreak, or symptoms. This is all just coming out of no where for me. I have been reading forums and websites and I keep hearing about the Western Blot test. I plan to take this soon. I am just wondering if any doctors have an opinion. Thanks so much!!

You most certainly can, there is no more comprehensive test for herpes antibodies than the WB. Its accuracy is probably just on 100% for HSV2.

Swabbing the reported rash/lesions won't help.  No way that's herpes. The WB is the only additional test for you to consider, unless and until you get more typical genital lesions that suggest herpes.

You should get a WB test just to be sure... Ur # is below 3.5 and should get a confirmatory test in the absence of outbreak.    The lesions u refer to .... Did u get a PCR test?  Normal culture may not as sensitive especially if the lesions are greater than 48 hours.  In the mean time if u get another lesions ... Go get it swabbed ASAP and ask for typing culture or PCR test preferred.
Hope all works out will will pray for you.  God bless, S

This is a community forum staffed only by volunteers, mostly not health professionals. You won't get a doctor's opinion here.

But I think you have HSV2. Your doctor's "no way" statement isn't quite right; there is at least a small possibility of a false positive result. But an ELISA value of 2.5 usually is valid.

At the same time, I agree the symptoms you report don't sound like herpes. You apparently have an asymptomatic HSV2 infection plus some other explanation for the genital area symptoms. You'll have to continue to work with your doctor(s) on those.

Even if you have HSV2, it's no surprise your partner's test is negative. Many couples in which one person is infected go many years before the infection is finally transmitted. Often it never happens at all.

If you want to nail down your probable infection with certainty, an HSV Western blot test is the best option. Any doctor or lab can request the test; the specimen has to be sent to the University of Washington (I think that's still the only lab that does the test), but the lab will know how to make those arragnements.

Good luck--
