Confused about my test results

Confused about my test results

Hi, I just got tested for herpes 1 and 2, I knew that I have herpes 1 due to some cold sores in my mouth sometimes but I went ahead and I ask my doctor if I could get test it for both and well my doctor gave me the results and she couldnt explain clear to me,

she said that I was positive for herpes 1 from a long time ago and negative for herpes 2 but she also said that in the last 6 months I was positive either for 1 or 2 she couldnt tell me if it was herpes 2 for sure, anyways here are the result to see if any of you can help me.

Test                                               abnormal                           reference range
HSV 1/2 IGM                                  1.38                                     <1.10

less than .90 ---- negative for anti-HSV 1 and/or 2 IgM
0.90 - 1.09 ----- equivocal for anti-HSV 1 and /or 2 IgM Greater than or equal 1.10 ----Positive for anti-HsV 1 and/or2 IgM

and then in button says

HSV 1 IGM Antibodies IFA
HSV 1 IgM Atibodies IFA                          Not detected                              Not detected

HSV 2 IgM Antibodies IFA
HSV 2 IgM antibodies IFA                        Not Detected                              Not Detected

So Am I have herpes 1 and 2 or just 1, I am very confused and she could not say, she only said it could be one or the other or both.

If this is not clear what kind of test can I do to make sure if I have herpes 2?

Please help me, Please.

Well, first of all, the IgM test is old and unreliable in that it cant decipher what type of virus you have.  Most of the time it gives a false positive because it picks up other types of viruses that are related to herpes such as the chicken pox.  I would go back and ask for a type specific IgG test.  This test is able to decipher what kind of herpes you have and is the most accurate test out to date.  Alot of times, ppl get both the IgM and IgG tests done together.  Here's a link that can give you more information on these tests:

I hope this helps!
