Confused

Hello Doctor,

On a routine visit to my OBGYN,I was recently notifed that I had been possibly exposed to the herpes virus although I had not and still have not presented any symptoms for this virus. I went in for a blood and the results came back HSV 1: IgG 0.10, which i was told to be negative and HSV 2: IgG 3.02, which i was told to be positive for which i was prescribed to take 1/2 tablet valtrex daily. I began to do research within this site and read that the value of "3.02" for HSV 2 falls into a gray area for lab values and should probably be retested of a possible different reading. Is this true? I also read that a western blot test should be done in order to conform a recent diagnosis if any other test were used such as the herpeselect test. Is there a chance of possible misdiagnosis?

Yes indeed since you can't recall a history of any genital symptoms you should confirm your hsv2 igg result with another test. The herpes WB or the herpes biokit would both be good choices to do so with.

I wouldn't start the valtrex until you confirm your diagnosis and even then - it's up to you if you want to take it or not. Also 1/2 a valtrex, if it's the 500mg tablet, isn't an appropriate dose.
