Contagious with acyclovir?

Hello, my boyfriend and I are in a monogamous long distance relationship. He has herpes, and to prevent me from getting it, takes acyclovir before and during the periods we visit each other. Unfortunatley, this past Sunday (before he started acyclovir again) he had an outbreak. He promtly took the medicine (4 pills each day since) and never developed blisters. He describes it as a bit of redness which is fading. I am going to see him in two days. Is he contagious? Should we have sex or wait?

Thanks for the response. We see each other infrequently because he lives in Europe - probably about once every 4 months. He's only staying for a week this time so it's rough. I'm actually not sure how many mg's his dosage is... but I'll be sure to find out tomorrow and make sure he's taking it properly. Usually he starts taking it like 4 days or so before he sees me, but the outbreak preceded this time.

Thanks for the response, I guess we'll have to think a bit more about this.

How often do you two see each other? How many days prior to visiting you does he start his acyclovir?

The dose of acyclovir for ob's is 400mg 3x/day for 5 days or 800mg 3x/day for 2 days.

In theory he would no longer be shedding by saturday but that's not a perfect assumption. It's up to the two of you how you feel about having sex this weekend.
