Continual Vaginal Burning

I have had herpes for over 2o years and it has been a very mild case. I only had a small breakout once or so per year and no medications were needed to treat it. The last 6 months my urologist and gynecologist have been treating me for what they thought was a bacterial infection and a vaginal infections until recently. I now am experiencing continual vaginal burning that they have attributed to herpes. I am on an antiviral twice a day but it doesn't help alot. I was wondering if anyone else ever had this happen to them. I have no lesions or sores present. My vaginal canal and all other parts appear normal. I don't understand how this could be the herpes since it has never been this way before. Thank you for any help anyone can give.

So the saga continues...

My gyn went ahead and put me on the Estrogen cream 3 times a week for the next couple of months to see if it gives me any relief. He said that he did not consider this option before as my vaginal walls do not look to be thin or like those of a woman with atrophic vaginitis. He also said that this came on too fast for him to think it was the issue. The problem is that every time I go to see him he says that my vagina looks healthy and it doesn't show signs of irritation or inflammation.

At this point, I am taking Aleve 3 times a day and using the estorgen cream. The pain is not as acute as a few weeks ago and hopefully the Estrogen will be the answer. There have been a few days when it actually felt normal again.  He took me off Valtrex as that did not really seem to help.

Thank you again to all of you for your input and support. It really helps to know that I am not the only person to have experienced this.

Herpes will not cause burning all the time - no doubt the Valtrex "helping" is coincidental. But many other things will cause burning - has she seen a Vulva specialist?

There's no such thing as low positive short term. If she had a low positive, she should confirm it with the Western Blot - that way she'll know for certain!. But still, this almost certainly is not from herpes.

can't believe they haven't considered atrophic vaginitis if you've had a hysterectomy!  it's pretty common even if you still have your ovaries.

best of luck and stop back and let us know how things go :)

No one has mentioned anything to me about a topical cream.I was at he urologist today and he has put me on vesicare once a day because I was having frequency with this too.It has helped and I have been on it for a few months now. However, at this point I don't honestly know that the frequency isn't just my nerves.

I am going back to my gyn tomorrow and will ask him about the cream. He told me that he has never had a patient with my symptoms before and is not sure where to go with this. He said that since all my tests for bacterial and fungal infections were negative he didn't have a clue other than the herpes. As of today via the phone call with him he no longer thinks it is the herpes. He said that I would have responded to the valtrex by now. I just completed 10 days of it.

I did have a hysterectomy 10 years ago at 36 and was thinking that maybe my hormones are off and have somehow caused this.

Thank you Grace for your response. I was really worried to think that this was how my herpes was going to be presenting itself from now on. I still need to figure this out but I will sleep a little easier thanks to your response. I will update you and let you know what my gynecologist has to say about the estrogen cream.

herpes isn't going to cause continuous burning.

chronic vaginitis can cause damage to the sensitive genital skin. have they tried something as simple as topical estrogen cream several times a week for a few months for you to strengthen the genital skin?
