Could I have genital and oral herpes??? Tingles everywhere

My GF of 5 years and I had had sex for the 1000th time...We had oral sex approx 4 weeks ago unprotected. She has never had a cold sore for as long as I have known her. I tested for HSV 1 and 2 approx 9 months ago and both were neg. Well about a week ago my upper lip started to swell...I gave it one day. The next day being a Thursday it was more swollen and had tiny little white bumps on it....I went to the Dr Thursday and they treated me for a possible herpes primary out break. Prior to this I was sick. Ear ache pain in my neck and back and so on. I have only been with her sexually during the past two years. I kissed a guy the Saturday before the outbreak but that was it...My doctor did not know what to make of my lips. They prescribed valtex x 2 grams for 2 days. The next day I saw tiny scabs on my semi swollen lips.... I also saw little clear droplets like dew on my lips..That Saturday my legs and toes tingled...rear bad. Ached kinda. Felt like soda all over...Then Sunday I felt slight pain during urination. Monday my vagina started to swell???? a thin water like discharge came from it no sores just tiny bumps like the ones on my lips...I went back to the doctor Tues they took a vaginal culture and blood work. They said my vagina did not look like herpes infection per say. But they said the valtex could be suppressing the viral infection. So im waiting for my labs now


My question is this. Could my GF have given me genital herpes from oral sex even though she never has had a cold sore....

Is it possible to have a simultaneous primary herpetic out break?

Is it possible I auto inculcated myself even though I see no sore per say on my lip?

What are the leg tingles about. Could oral herpes also cause that?

you could've gotten oral and genital herpes form your gf. has she ever been tested?

not likely you transmitted hsv1 from your oral area to your genital area .

did anything come back from your cultures?

No she never was tested until resent... She thought that a clean STD check meant no herpes....I explained that she has to request that so we were sleeping together unprotected...Dumb I know..... Do my symptoms sound like herpes? What about the tingles...I haven’t got my results yet. I was tested yesterday. She was tested Monday....Both of us are waiting. Could I have had simultaneous outbreaks? Can oral herpes travel down to my vagina via my nervous system or visa versa? Could I have tiny cold sores on my lips

no herpes won't travel down your nervous system to infect your genital area - doesn't work that way. If you kissed your partner prior to her performing oral on you though that would be how you get oral and genital hsv1 at the same time.  

following up on this is the best you can do though I know how hard it is to wait for test results.

many things can cause those symptoms. really herpes is not the only germ out there.  At this point the best you can do is to continue following up with your provider.

you CAN transfer HSV1 to other parts of your body if you are shedding....I had a really bad HSV1 outbreak after having my daughter and was told not to get too close to her that the blisters are very contagious as well as the scabs when they drop off....also, if you use the same washcloth on your face and genitalia or anywhere on your body you can spread it...I know it has happened to me

You can shed and be contagious w/o symptoms...you don't have to have blisters or an outbreak to spread herpes.

They symptoms you experiencing sound like they could be a systematic outbreak...it CAN infect your central nervous system including your brain...it can be HSV or shingles (either way it can be herp...b/c chickenpox/chingles is a type of it)

after the initial infection has run it's course, your body builds up protective antibodies to help protect you from transmitting the virus all over  your body.  

the odds of herpes causing a systemic infection are very low thankfully. this poster needs to continue her work up for other reasons behind what is going on.  

also the odds of someone only having shingles on their face and genitals is incredibly unlikely.

Thank you for your reply....This sickness has been very odd. Quivers in my behind, leg and so fourth. The thing is my lip never really had a visble sore...i cant understand how the outbreaks seemd to happen in both places at the same time. It was not a happy time. Ive been on Valtrex for 7 days and im almost normal again almost. I also was very careful when I saw my lips swell. I was carefull not to tounch my mouth and private... I even washed my hands prior to using the bathroom

I'm hoping today to have some information...My GF should have her labs today just maybe....I dont think I self affected my private...I dont....I have great hygene and as stated no sores could really be seen on my lips to touch and then retouch my vagina...There were tiny droplets however...Then scabs... tiny ones that you could hardly see...As for my vagina today It feel okay...Still has a odd watery discharge and is swollen. I almost feel normal after 1.5 weeks of this drama. I have prepared myself for the worst...Prior to me dating my GF she did live a very sexual life....Thats why I asked her to be tested...She said she was okay but was not tested for everything! She been with her fair share of male and female partners...I feel so stupid now....I have accepted that I may have it so I wont be so devestated.

the odds of transmitting an oral hsv1 infection to the genital area yourself are incredibly low.  it's not likely that it's what happened. As I said, if you kissed your partner prior to oral sex, if they have hsv1 orally, they can transmit it to both areas. This occurs anywhere from 1/4 - 2/3's of the time when folks contract hsv1 genitally from what studies we have.  

If your symptoms should ever reoccur, either orally or genitally,  be seen within 48 hours of their appearance for a lesion culture and typing. A visual diagnosis of herpes doesn't cut it.  did they test you vaginally for infections too? have those results come back yet?

I appreciate your time....The truth is I have lived a very sheltered sex life. I was very uninformed about certain things...Im so mad cause I have had 4 partners in my life!!! I was tested only vaginally...But they said they may not have results back because the did not have a weeping sore on me? They did a culture of my vaginal fluid and they did blood labs....Is it possible that my GF could test negitive for herpes and still be a shedder?...If she didnt give it to me I guess I got it from the guy who kissed me some how? but we were not naked!!!! I had pants and a shirt and everything...It was just a kiss nothing more.. No fondeling nothing...I feel like my body has a life of its on with all the tingles...MY GF even stated that maybe I gave to my self after the guy kissed me:(

did the culture of your vaginal discharge come back yet?  you could have a bacterial infection going on too.

They did perscrible flagly and valtrex....The culture is not back yet...Can a person wit HSV have a negative result if they had it for a while. Can valtrex cause vagina irriation?

valtrex won't cause irritation.  I'd suspect the discharge you have of being the cause of that.

sounds like they suspected bv and gave you flagyl. don't drink alcohol while taking and for a few days afterwards or you'll get really sick.


even the best blood tests we have still miss 1 out of every 10 hsv1 results.   lesion cultures are most helpful for hsv1.

My GF received her results back...She tested positive for HSV1 99%. I on the other hand tested negative via culture and blood test. Last time we were intimate was on 4/30/10. My OB occurred on 5/22. I still have tingle in my legs and toes...I feel scared because the dr says I should be fine. But if im fine why is this happening. I’ve had tiny white bumps on my lips and vaginal irritation? I would have bet my life I was having a outbreak? What other virus could do this? Could it be a false negative? I feel on edge with all of this and feel lost...My question is could it be a false negative? Could I have contracted the virus via cuddling fully clothed? Could the virus penetrate clothing?

I'm not sure what testing she had done that said 99%?

at this point no way to know if you have contracted hsv1 orally and genitally or not.  your current symptoms do not sound like herpes. you also had bv which also causes rashes and such too. unless you get a recurrence of symptoms to culture, no way to know if you have hsv1 orally and/or genitally.  You can try just repeating your hsv1 igg in 3 or 4 months but that will only tell you what you have, not where.  

no, you did not contract genital herpes fully clothed.

It has been almost six months and I felt the need to update this thread. Unfortunately, I still have no confirmed diagnosis which is disturbing and draining. For the 1st time in my life I feel like medical science has failed me. Since my last post things have evolved in my body and improved.  I still have strange sensations that are mostly on the left side of body (tingles/tremors/ twitches). I have broken out with a mild vaginal rash every month since the last sexual encounter. I even get a tingle/buzz like sensation in my groin every now and then (1 week prior to my cycle). Sometimes my anus even feels odd it’s so weird. My lips still tingle especially near my cycle...sometimes I even get a small bubble on my lip that stays fairly small never breaks...I was tested for HSV (at 3 months and 5 months) and HIV (at 3 month) because I have been so worried.  Everything has been negative…Sometime I feel like I’m getting sick and (flu/cold symptoms) I’m so beat. My underarms/groin area has swollen glands. In the beginning I would have severe foot sensitivity and these odd red spots on my soles would appear (that’s cleared up)…The only sex I have had was with my partner and it was unprotected oral...I kissed this guy but other than her I have not had any other partners in the last 2 years...Are there any other viruses that u may be aware of that could cause this…My Gyno says I should see a neurologist.

definitely see a neurologist and also a dermatologist at this point. They can work together to try to figure out what is going on.
