Could the test be wrong?

I have been in a monogamous relationship for a year and half. Several weeks ago, I noticed small bumps appearing around the genital area and there was a lession. At first I had assumed that I must have cut myself while shaving because there was NO PAIN at all. When it didn't go away after a few days, I went to the gynecologist. Upon meeting with the doctor, he said that the bumps could be foliculitis (folliculitis). Once I had asked the possibility of herpes, he said that since I have no pain at all, herpes wasn't a possibility. To ease my worries, he sent me to a dermatologist that same day. This doctor also confirmed the first doctors assumption that it was not herpes since I had no pain. She gave me some cream and took a culture test just in case. Upon using the cream, 3 days later the lession and bumps we're gone. I never felt a thing.
Four weeks later, the dermatologist calls me back and tells me that the culture test came back positive for herpes.
Is it possible that it was wrong? My boyfriend doesn't have any symptoms and we don't use a condom when we have sex. If I did contract herpes from him, wouldn't it the symptoms have appeared earlier on in the relationship. I read online that symptoms show 2-3 after your infected with the disease. It's been over 2 months now and I haven't had an outbreak.
Both doctors told me that it wasn't herpes and then the culture comes back positive. I'm in denial because I don't believe its possible. Is a blood test a more effective way of getting better results? And if the blood test is negative then do I not have herpes even if the culture was positive?

A culture test is going to override a visual exam.

If the culture came back positive, then you have herpes. Did they tell you what type it was, i.e. HSV1 or HSV2?

HSV1 could have been contracted by receiving oral sex. Over 60% of the population has HSV1. Most of it is oral, i.e. they have a history of cold sores or have the virus but do not get cold sores.

HSV2 would likely have been contracted by genital contact.

If you take a blood test, it may take 3-4 months for Herpes to show up.

My doctor didn't even tell me at first what type I had, only when I researched it later on, I called her back. I have HSV1 type. Are there any differences between the two other than how they have been contracted?
So theres really no point getting a blood test then?
