Could this be something else or Herpes

by 2upset, Jun 02, 2009 08:14PM
I had a sexual encounter 12 weeks ago with someone who was uncircumcised from another country.  We used a condom but it kept coming off and there periods of skin on skin contact.  I have not had contact with him since and have no idea of his STD status...  I have been very worried about STD's mainly herpes since this time.

I have been tested for Chlamidia, gonnoreaha and Tric, all negative.  I was having ongoing yeast infections or itching combined with a weird pain i have never experienced on the right side of my labia near my clitoris.  It is on going off and on..with my itching and feelings of yeast infections.  I have never had recurring yeast infections and have gone through several treatments in this 12 week period.   I have never had a true outbreak with blisters or sores that I see pictures of.  At 8 weeks I went to my doctor because of the ongoing symptoms and she did a herpes blood test and inspection.  She said she thought I had one area that looked like genital warts and at 9weeks she did a biopsy where she removed the warts and had them sent back to a lab.  The resuts came back as "suggestive" for HPV.  My Herpes test came back as positive for HSV1 and negative for HSV2. I have had cold sores since a teenager so knew I would be positive for HSV1.  I also had an HIV test at 10 weeks that came back negative.
I continue to have odd symptoms like the pain always on the right side of my labia and numbness/tingling sensations in my right buttocks and leg.  I also have started getting numbness on the right side of my face..  I know all this sounds very crazy..but it just does not feel right at all.  So my question is how accurate would a blood test be at 8 weeks and do I actually have to have an "outbreak" to show positive for HSV2 OR could these be symptoms of the HPV virus?
I was planning on doing a reblood test but can i do it at 12 weeks now or do i need to wait until 16.?  Thank you any help is appreciated

If you are going to retest, I'd wait and retest at the 4 month mark since you have hsv1. If you have fresh symptoms at any point, go and be seen for a pcr swab for herpes on them.

could this be herpes? It could be but it really sounds like yeast and irritation ( I"m assuming you are getting properly tested for yeast each time and not just a visual diagnosis of yeast or a self diagnosis ).  Talk to your provider about some longer term treatment for yeast to try to get rid of it.

Thanks so much Grace,

One more question.. Does it matter what my numbers were at 8 weeks.  So I never got the actual numbers, so if I call the Dr's office and get my numbers would it give any indicator.  How accurate would an 8 I actually think it was 9 weeks but dont think that matters.  I was really thinking of tesing at 12 weeks only because I heard if they do herpselect( i need to find out ) that that test is like 98% accurate at 12 weeks or something like that..
Also, i have been having severe depression as well... that I NEVER EVER have.  Some days and it is typically when my symptoms are more pronounced I cant stop thinking about it and what have i done thoughts where i dont want to do anything but stay in bed.

Do you see people who it is entirely psychological and they just convince themselves they have this and then exhibit the symptoms.?

Oh sorry one more thing.   So are you saying that because I have HSV1 then that takes HSV2 longer to seroconvert? or for the antibodies to show up?

I have an appt to be tested at 12 weeks but am wondering if it is a complete waste of time..

if there shows an increase from my test at 8 weeks...is that telling or can it just be because of anomolies within the test.?  Again thanks!

Do we see folks who convince themselves that things are going on that aren't? Well sure we do but honestly most times there's really something going on, it's just a matter of figuring out what. Don't underestimate yeast and the issues it can cause - keep following up on that part too.

no, the numeric results of your 8 week test don't have any significance as to how "negative" they are if that's what you are thinking of.

Yes, having hsv1 can delay seroconversion sometimes, we recommend waiting for testing at the 16 week mark in general.

If you are having symptoms of depression, make an appointment with a therapist. Start with some talk therapy and learn better ways to handle the rough times in life - trust me, they'll be many, many more that are way harder to deal with than this unfortunately.
