I am sexually active male in my 50's but have had less than 10 partners. About 1.5 years ago i was STD tested at a lab and then again about 6 months later, and the only thing that came back positive (both times) was approximately the same result (this was the last one)>
My doctor interpreted the results as I do not have Herpes, unless I have an outbreak, and then it can be tested. Is there any way I can know for sure??
The igg blood test you had done was a combined herpes test which was a total waste of time and money since by the time you hit your 50's you are most likely hsv1+. You need to repeat your igg blood test with a type specific herpes igg blood test. Avoid the igm herpes blood test - it's a poor test overall.
So do I ask my Dr. for "type specific herpes igg blood test" or is there some other name for it. I know the lab where i took the others, only offerred a STD testing for like $149 that tested everything.....
I'd make a complaint to the lab then if they are not including type specific herpes igg blood testing in their package and are only doing the combined herpes blood test. That's really not doing any service to the folks purchasing from them :(
Yes, ask for a type specific herpes igg blood test. If your provider is unfamilar with what to order, ask what lab they use and I can specifically look up the test # they should order for you in most cases.
Thanks so much. You guys seem so much more knowledgeable than the doctors I have talked to. Can you recommend any clinics in the Atlanta area that have similar knowledge?
Atlanta has a very active herpes group. You can contact them for more specific recommendations - http://www.atlantahclub.com/supportgroup.htm has their contact info.
