Do I have it, how did I get it

I had sex with my husband and a day later he has these sores on his penis and swollen lymph nodes in his genital area.  A day after that I develop these sores on my upper lip.  I took a herpes test via vaginal swab three days later (5 days after sex) and I was told I was negative.  They didn't take swabs from lip because they said they only do testing from genital sores.  they also stated the sores on my lip were not indicative of herpes. However, my husband was treated based on symptoms with Valtrex.and he is waiting for the results of his test to confirm.  He is not a person to go to the doctor so I know it was a problem.

Is it possible my tests results were wrong or maybe he has something else than herpes?  If he is positive would he have infected me or could I have infected him and me test negative?  Would I have both types? IS there a separate test for oral and genital herpes? I have to wait 8 more days for his test results and it is driving me crazy.

Thanks for answering my questions.

no reason for repeated vaginal herpes testing for  you since you aren't having herpes symptoms genitally.

I encourage both you and your husband to get herpes igg blood tests to see who has what and go from there.  lesion cultures have a high false negative rate so getting the blood work done for peace of mind is a good idea even if his culture comes back negative.

has his lesion culture come back yet?  I'd have him call the clinic and ask if he hasn't heard yet.

OK he told me they did a swab of his sores- He went to an STD clinic.  I went to the same clinic two days later and when I asked them to test me for herpes based on the sores on my lip they stated they dont do testing for that only vaginal or penis sores- they then told me that my lip sores didn't look like herpes.  THe next day I went to my own gyn who did the vaginal swab.

I am so confused now.  Should I get the herpes igg blood tests, when should I get it?  My husband gets his test results on the 18th.  if he is tested negative should I stilanl worry?

Thank you

just to clarify - what testing did your husband have done when he was seen?

Unfortunately neither of you have had adequate testing for herpes :(

It was pretty useless of them to swab your genital area when you had symptoms orally. they could've swabbed your oral area instead but it sounds like whoever you saw was a tad clueless about testing for herpes :(

Your spouse only having a visual diagnosis of herpes is fine for the purpose of starting treatment but a lesion culture should've also been done on his symptoms.

at this point I recommend you both get type specific herpes igg blood tests to see who has what and go from there.

Swab testing has a high false negative.  Herpes won't come a day later no.  Though your husband should have had his sores swabbed.

You both need to test using a type specific igg hsv test.  This will give you accurate answers as to what you and he may have.  If he has a new infection it may take up to 3 months for a test to be accurate.  If he gets tested now and he is negative and you test positive then he needs to repeat in 3 months.

Once you get tested please feel free to post your lab results and grace can look them over for you.
