Does herpes do this ?

Does herpes outbreaks happen all at once usually? What I mean is, is it likely to have an OB, then have it kind of trickle on for days with new bumps or whatever showing up over days or even weeks? Or is it typically a big bang then healing time? Thank you for your help!
