Dormant Herpes?

Ok,here goes. I have been with my boyfriend for three years. I have not had any sexual contact with anyone else, and neither has he. On the morning of January one, my labia started swelling. The next day it was mildly painful and still swollen. The next day I examined it and found pink bumps all over it. Now it is excruciating to urinate, and yesterday I had a fever of 102.27. All my research online points to herpes, but we have been faithful. Is it possible for one or both of us to have it for years, only to have an outbreak now? He doesn't have any symptoms at all. I just need to know if you can have it for years without signs. I've never had any problems of this type.... ever. So I'm scared on top of being in considerable pain. It's becoming harder to walk, too.

The bumps are on the inside of the labia on both sides. It looks like the tips of some of them are turning white. I didn't recently have a period. I will look at the handbook. I really appreciate your help.

Down load the "updated herpes handbook" by terri warren from westover hights, its free and has  a section on home remedies if this is herpes. But if you have pink bumps all over your vagina, its not consistant with herpes as is only on one side, but more of a yeast infection. Did you just have your period?

Of course. I'm just seeking answers until I can make it to the city. My road is impassable right now, though. So I've already missed the 48 hour mark, but I will do what I can as soon as possible. I've considered many things to help me in the meantime. I read somewhere that you can put lidocaine on there to make it easier to urinate. Since I don't have any, I wonder if sore throat spray would help. I'm getting desperate. I usually drink enough water to drown a fish, but lately I don't want anything because it hurts to urinate so bad. I tried pouring ice water while I urinate, but that seems to make it worse.

Using the word dormant is not correct but using the word having an outbreak would be more correct. But as mentioned both shed without a sore meaning its on the surface and can be contracted them but dont put the cart before the horse, get it swabbed and a blood test now ok?

I can't remember the last time we had oral. I know it's been over a year. So only the oral one can lay dormant for years?

Yes a person can have oral for years without any symptoms and if he gives oral sex it can be contracted in the genitals. There is a term called "shedding" which is the virus is on the surface without a lip sore and a person with oral hsv1 shedds 9-18% of the time. meaning up to 18% of the year the virus would be there, not high but not really low either.

I am quite literally snowed in at the moment. A lot of the terms you are using are foreign to me, but I will look them up. I thank you so much for responding. I've been so stressed since I found the bumps, and I have no where to turn. So you can have the oral kind for years, and show signs only now? I'm still so confused.

I would like to confirm a good point that tim makes as if it is herpes it may be from oral sex as its estimated that 60% upward would test positive for hsv1 oral.

Hi and yes its possible but with the fever is indictative of a new infection. Not implying anyone has cheated but with a new infection can be fever and body aches as the immune system is mounting a defense. Have them swabbed within 48 hours to confirm and a blood test. If the blood is negative and the swab positive it would be a new infection. While your at it have him tested as well.

If you have fresh lesions, get to your PCP, gyn or an ER and get them swabbed ("cultured").  No test you can take will be as conclusive as anything swabbed from a fresh blister. Make sure to insist that the culture be typed.  You could have HSV-1 genitally... and if that's the case, what you're going through right now will be the last big outbreak you will be expected to experience. Then again, perhaps it isn't HSV at all... I'll defer to the moderators here on that.

Would also be a good idea to have the IgG tests run for both you and the boyfriend. If they all blood tests are negative and the swab is positive, you will have your answer regarding dormancy.
